Am I the only one who is mildly nauseated by the get out the vote efforts? The MTV "rock the vote" takes first prize for attracting the most citizens, least likely to have had a passing grade in civics, and encouraging them to vote. Jefferson felt that public education was necessary for people to be qualified to vote. In fact, that seems to be the only reason he favored it. Given the state of public education, not to mention MTV, I see no reason to encourage anyone to vote.

Sad, but too true. I've always been of a mind that anyone voting for a federal candidate should get a ballot that states the candidate's position on 10 issues, rather than one with name and party affliation on it. Can't you just imagine the hue and cry that would raise? And that no one would even care that by opposing it, you're saying people are too stupid to cast an intelligent, informed vote.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Fuzzy ? The delectable Ms Wombat reckons I'm a dithery old fart so fuzzy is probably quite apt. Fuzzy Wombat ! Hmmm, I quite like that, sounds almost hi tech. Thats, Fuzzy Wombat Logic.

If I had my way I'd scrap all the parties themselves . A parliament of all independants. Nice idea but oh my what a schemozzle it would be.

While I might not agree with all of Rags points, I would say that the "guns or butter" debated gets rather skewed in the last 50 years. The refrain amoung the disenfranchised, like our pre-school poster, is, "if we can spend a million on an airplane, why can't we fund XYZ social program." It is never that simple and US Marines are not made over night but tend to be indispensable when the world turns nasty. The national defense is government's primary responsibility, we can figure out how to get the mail delivered at our leisure.
