What the heck. Hog thinks he can detect a "tone" in my posts and Val accuses me of "schooling" him. I seem to be on a role lately, why not see who else I can alienate.
tenuki, Since I am, what I guess you are referring to as a Jesus Freak, may I respectfully ask why I need to keep "it" to myself?
I thought I had a right to speak freely.
Just as you have a right to call me a freak.

Couple of observations (warning warning foreigner comment)
How much harm does the incumbant party do to its election chances by dismissing the outgoing administration ?
As far as McCain was concerned (or seemingly so from this distance) Bush and his fellow Republicans were as popular as a case of the pox.
That cannot have helped the 'down ticket races', surely ?
OK, so Bush was on the nose but McCain's 'maverick' status cannot have helped his party overall.

You don't seem freakish enough really, try harder. I'm talking about keeping it out of government, and not trying to force others to believe the same way through legistlation. Also, if you try to talk to me about it uninvited expect some lvl of rudeness back. I invited this obviously so I'm trying to be polite and appreciate your polite tone as well. peace bro.

Captain Wombat,
The conventional wisdom here is that McCain did as well as any Republican could likely have done. He'd locked horns with Bush in the past, which endeared him to independent voters, but his choice of Sarah Palin worked against him with the same indepedents.

tenuki - as I am unaware of any vast theocratic conspiracy, perhaps you could illustrate it for me? Just who are these villainous characters and what religion is it they are trying to force on us? What church is it we will have to attend, once they take over?

THe Repubs have some soul searching to do if they want to ensure a future where the party is relevant. the conservative "base" is small to begin with and shrinking. About the only demographic group McCain won is voters 65 and older according to Ed Rollins (Repub political advisor) on CNN. not exactly a group to build on for the long term.
Palin did nothing to attract moderates and independents. Even if she sees herself as the future of the party, she can hold the next Repub convention at a MacDonalds so the delegates can play bingo every morning. She won't need a larger venue. She also needs to repair the damage she did to herself this campaign--her image is just a hair above Bush's. McCain's Hail Mary pass in selecting her effectively was intercepted and run back for a touch down.
THis is the second national election in a row where the Dems have kicked Repub butt. 52-47 % is not a mandate, but it sure is an a** kicking. Unless the REpubs can broaden their appeal to attract people to "true" Conservatism (something the party is not even close to following now despite the rhetoric) or to attract moderates, the Repubs will be in purgatory for the forseeable future.
And the nation is in such a mess right now on multiple fronts that I think the Dems can rightfully claim some time to straighten things out. But there needs to be noticeable progress by 2010, or the repubs will have a toe hold to try to crawl back into the game.
Yes, the ancient Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times" comes to mind.

I seem to recall similar sentiments being expressed in '64 Mitch.

If we ejected them from our party, I'm sure you Dems would happily receive them into your party, honoring them with ample lip-service.

I don't have a lot of hopes for the next two years because I don't think the current crop of democrats (besides perhaps Obama) has any real taste for change. I think the new congress and senate are going to just tear themselves up with useless infighting crap, frustrating and confusing Obama and the American people who voted for change. Expect Obama and the Republicans to have to band together with the few sensible Dems to get anything done.
|
Sen. Obama was only elected yesterday, and already you Dems are anticipating his failure and making excuses for him. Sheesh! Give the guy a chance! In any case, you surely don't expect the Republicans, who are now in the role of the "loyal opposition," to lay down and roll over for him, do you? I don't remember your Dems in Congress laying down and rolling over for Presidents Bush Jr. or Sr., or Reagan or Ford or Nixon or Eisenhower. The loyal opposition is the only thing that reins in a President and prevents him from overreaching, and you can count on us performing that duty during the next four years.
