You are wrong, Sway. Probably because you dont live in NY you didnt see the local reports on Hillary visiting every single one of our 62 counties, the vast majority several times. She spent more time in podunk little diners drinking crappy coffee than you can imagine. And yes, it took her the better part of 2 years to do it. The national press has no appetite for crappy little upstate town where nothing ever happens so it didnt get in the news much - I am not surprised that you arent aware of it.

I have no particular love for Hillary and wasnt happy that she became our senator for much the same reason I dont want Caroline Kennedy to be our Senator - We have plenty of well qualified New Yorkers who worked hard to get the experience necessary. Hillary worked hard to get elected but she really isnt a New Yorker. Caroline Kennedy IS a New Yorker but she has done nothing to make me think she has what it takes to be a good senator.

Chuck Schumer, though you may not like him, got where he is by being a hard working New Yorker who worked his way up the ladder. Whatever you think about him, he is a very hard working guy.

We NEED good advocates in Washington because we pay far more in federal taxes than we get back in federal spending, unlike many of the so-called red states out west. New York pays its own way and then some. I am tired of subsidizing Republicans who insist on whining about the feds when in fact they are sucking dollars from the rest of us.

interesting note - your new commander palin's state is second only to New Mexico in getting more federal spending than they pay. Maybe THAT is what you guys want for your states!! Just more hogs at the trough!

I hear you. If we could limit the Federal Govt. to national defense and whatever else is constitutionally required, the pork trough could be moved to each state's capitol. Wait a minute, were you complaining about federal pork, or that you weren't getting enough of it?

Of course he was!

No one in their right mind thinks that NY gets back less than they really receive from the feds...it's just not all on paper directly related to money in and money out. For instance, who do we think that Amtrack subsidies disproportionally benefit, the eastern corridor or the rest of the country?

He also manages to ignore that the federal government owns something on the order of 75% of Alaska it's own self. No other state has less control over it's own land than Alaska.

Serial killers are often hard workers in their chosen endeavors as well. Chuck Schumer is nothing more than a legislative ambulance chaser. And you New Yorkers should consider fixing your own potholes. Or perhaps you're too busy prosecuting Wall Street in state courts in an effort to extort money from them due solely to a geographic coincidence? Prosecutions that, if even necessary, are rightfully a federal matter. Or did you think that the rest of us did not follow the career of Mr. Spitzer? Jerry Ford had it right when he said to NYC to, "Drop Dead!". (actually he didn't say it, the Daily News did but, you get the point!) It's hardly comforting to know that New Yorkers still think the rest of the country should bail them out from their own excesses.

And while we're on it; the rest of the country thinks the Yankees suck, too! (g)

And yeah, I remember Hillary traveling around at taxpayer expense in New York. That doesn't not make her a carpetbagger. Glad you guys elected here; I cannot imagine the carnage that might have been had she to return to Illinois.

I'm a NY Native. I grew up in one of those "crappy little upstate towns where nothing ever happens so it didn't get in the news much"

Theres a whole world outside the beltway, and outside of the upstate known as "Fishkill & Beacon"

Heres some disturbing things.
If you get on a bus in Albany, or buffalo, or Syracuse, 25% of the fare goes to support the NYC transit system.
Frink Sno-Plows, Largest Mfr in he world. 275 people. In business since 1929, out of business because they wanted to expand, bought land next door, EPA said it needed to be cleaned up and because THEY were the owner, Frink had to pay for it. Hillarys office never answerd the call. Out of business.

Syracuse China. founded in the late 1800's. Go into any restaurant. Tip over the saucer, theres over a 50% chance is says "Made in Syracuse" Closing March, 2009, going offshore.

There are so many others, family farms, Allied Chemical, New Process Gear, P&C Markets, Fays Drugs, Marcellus Casket, Carrier. Hillary was too busy. Cuomo was lobbying,
Spitzer was getting his knob polished while Rome burned.
Yup, you're right, The only thing that matters is south of Poughkeepsie.

Say goodbye to drilling for American oil, either offshore or out west. While most of the Obama cabinet has not been very controversial, the appointment of Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior signals that the development of American oil and natural gas fields is likely to remain right where it is now; nowhere! Mr. Salazar opposed virtually all new drilling when gasoline was over $4/gallon, I cannot imagine a moderating of that opinion.

In related news, standby for yet more wasted federal subsidies on alternative fuels. The biodiesel industry as well as the ethanol industries have their D.C. operatives in place. While any farmer with a lick of sense regrets the day somebody talked him to dumping that stuff in the tank of the old I-H he is, of course, not against the rest of us wasting our money. Messrs. Salazar and Obama intend to help us do so.

I have to take issue with this Sck5.

It is true that more federal money goes to rural areas in the way you say it, but not in the way you mean it. Yes, federal money goes to rural areas, but do you know what it goes there to do ? I can assure you it's not coming to rural areas to benefit rural people. Rural areas get a lot of money to do things like build really long lonely highways, manage large areas of national forest, generate hydro-electric power, the list goes on and on ... do you know what all of those things have in common ? They supply CITIES with food, electricity, vacation destinations, and all the rest. What do rural people give a damn about interstate highways ? Or giving up their land so that suburbanites have another place to go hiking and see deer for the first time ?

Remember where your food comes from, and the lumber that built your house.

Who works for the companies that provide the cities with food, electricity, and lumber? Probably the folks living the rural areas.

Give me a break.

If rural people receive such a windfall of federal, state, etc, money, then why is it that most rural people don't have cell phones (no cell infrastructure), don't have cable modems (no cable), live on dirt roads, use dial-up to get to the net, often clear the roads themselves, fix potholes themselves, provide their own water, and sometimes their own electricity. Even when they don't make their own electricity it's often spotty, going out for a week or more at a time when there are storms.

Rural people know they are getting ripped off when the tax man takes a third or more of their paycheck, because they know that money is building a new museum in the city, or a new suburban hospital, or paving an interstate that takes business away from the local economy, or is used to steal their land, etc. That's why the number one issue with rural people is taxes - it's not because they are confused or stupid, quite the contrary, it's because they know EXACTLY what's going on.

Don't even try to make it like rural people have it all bright and shiney.
