I think you have all had much turkey to eat, it is like watching people who are half asleep trying to throw that one last punch before their eyes roll back in their heads. Wake up, you can do better than this. Christmas is over, where is that Democrat vs. Republican spirit, that deep down desire to kick the crap out of each other like you mean it.

Oh no, of course we won't use it for anything but tracking mileage.

Well yes, I DO think it is patriotic when I do my part to support the United States of America by paying my taxes. I am proud to support the US Army with my taxes. I am proud to support the Navy and the Air Force and the Marines. I am especially proud to support the Coast Guard for entirely selfish reasons. I am proud to support the rule of law. What makes this country great is that each and every one of us contributes to the whole and there is nothing wrong or bad about doing that. In fact it is exactly what gives us the right to an opinion about what they do with our money.
I am often puzzled by the seeming inability of rightwingers to see the connection between the taxes they pay and the things that those taxes buy.
Do I LIKE paying taxes? No more than anyone does. But it is just plain lunacy to think that this country could be as great as it is if we didnt kick in what is needed to pay for it. We dont do things like have a legal system for free. We dont have armed forces for free.
Are politicians corrupt morons who waste a lot of money? Sure, but that is no news and our guys are in fact a bit more honest than some others we could name. Politics is a corrupting business - always has been and always will be. As a famous guy once said, Democracy is the worst system there is except for all the others.
You guys may not be proud to contribute to the USA but I am, even if I hate doing it every April 15.

That's just it. We DO see the connection between the taxes we pay and the things those taxes buy. I think we look at it from a different direction. Instead of saying "I hate paying my taxes but it buys wonderful things" which it does, we would say "the govt is buying (giving away, subsidizing, bailing out) what??? Why the hell would I want to pay for that????"
I think you're barking up the wrong tree when preaching about how patriotic it is to pay your taxes to support our military and coast guard. I believe it's the liberals who are always complaining about how much we spend on our military while poor people here in america can't pay their cell phone bill.

Taxes are a necessary evil, not some hallmark of patriotism.
We, as John said, are all too aware of how they get spent. and that is the problem. As for the military, both Clinton and Carter cut spending.

It's paying taxes so Joe and Jane living in their HUD supported apartment eating food bought with WIC coupons and sending in a form so they can get a coupon to buy a HDTV that freaks me out.
Where did that become patriotic?
I thought patriotic was getting up off your ass and making something of yourself.

Gee US27, maybe you should leave it to the libs to tell us what libs think. The libs might have a better idea than a conservative dont you think?
But more to the point, in a diverse democratic country like ours there is ALWAYS going to be a fair proportion of government spending that any given individual doesnt like. There is no way around that short of dictatorship by one party, where all the spending is what THEY like and the rest of the people are told to stuff it. Thats what the communists and fascists do and we all ought to be able to agree that is a bad thing right?
I have no problem with complaining about government stupidity or even stuff that isnt stupid that you just dont agree with. That keeps them on their toes and with any luck embarrasses them into doing less stupid things. But it is a problem when ALL government is seen as bad because that is just as extreme as the far left libs you guys complain about. There is a sweet spot in the middle and as long as everyone is kept in the game we will see ebbs and flows where one side is on top for a while, then the other side, etc. So right now most people think Bush did a lousy job so he and the Repubs got spanked. We will see if Obama can do any better. I certainly hope he does but either way the repubs will be on top again some day - and i have no doubt their message will have evolved from what lost them two elections in a row.
Basically, you cant always get what you want, and in a democracy you shouldnt.

Sorry sck, it wasn't the message that lost for them, it was their performance.
I know of none of the conservatives that want to do away with ALL government and the taxes that support it. Though the statement is atypical of your rhetoric.

Some Libertarians want to get rid of all government, but that party seems to pick up a lot of Anarchists who don't have a home.
