A most excellent point regarding Rudy. The problem as I see it is that he is more than likely to be confronting a Democratic Congress much inclined to pursue it's own agenda and he'll not be equipped with an electoral mandate of much significance. The nature of the presidency is that he'll have to confront all issues, with far fewer battles that he can choose not to foght. The nomination of judges comes to mind. I am less than confident that he'll choose to go to the wall over judicial nominations and choose to pick judges and justices more amenable to a Democratic Senate than what we might like. That is why I have concerns about him.
On the other hand, I do not think he is electable in the general election and i give him slim hope for the nomination as well, both for the same reason. Rudy is not electable for the same reason I believe that Newt gingrich did not run. The American people will elect a divorced man, maybe even one twice divorced. I do not believe though that they will elect a man who's proven to be a philanderer. Both Rudy and Newt made the mistake of developing a relationship with their current wives while still married to their ex-wives. And, I believe, they've both done it twice. Divorce is one thing, fooling around on your wife yet another. The American people tolerated Clinton's shennanigans because he was already in office and his wife stood by him prior to the first election when he was charged with adultery. Neither Rudy or Newt could slip themselves into the same protective envelope. Rudy's situation was quite common knowledge, it's obviously affected his kids, and while that might have played in New York City it won't, as the saying goes, play in Peoria. Consult any list of character defects polled among American's and adultery leads the list, ahead even of alcoholism. Adultery challenges the most trust-based institution in American's daily lives. It's probably why they regard it as the most serious of character defects. "If his wife can't trust him" resonates.
I share your concerns with Romney's pragmatism having had enough of "kinder, gentler" and "compassionate conservatism". Those are just code words for, more like Democrats. My only satisfaction with the current president is the battles he has chosen to fight as a matter of principle. In too many other areas, such as the size of government and federalism, i have found his principles either lacking or unacted upon.
