Sorry, JA, but if you didn't see the sign-up list, your eyes aren't sharp enough for patrol duty. (VBG)

Well I just missed it because it was all rushed through so quickly, seeing how it was a big emergency and all. It really needed to be rushed too, no time for members of congress to read it, because that would have delayed it reaching Obama's desk. It had to reach the desk quickly, so that it could sit there for four days waiting for him to sign it.

So now I am trying to figure out how my company can get a bailout. It will be tough, since my employees are non-union and I pay their health benefits.

My financial misfortune is all my own fault. In hindsight, I have handled my business and personal finances extremely badly. Foolishly, I bought a house I could easily afford. I do have a car loan to go with the mortgage, but it's a low rate and i can actually afford the payment. The boat is paid for and I didn't take a loan on it.

All very bad moves. How will I get Obama to lower my mortgage rate or pay down my principal now? My company does not have a huge debt for the taxpayers to shoulder.

I see I need to rethink the way I do things...

Ask Paulson. He probably has some money left over from the 750 Billion that Bush and he decided to give away with no strings attached. I know he can help you somehow.....

The newer money actually comes with some strings attached, like getting it paid back, caps on CEO pay, some oversight, public ownership of the companies, etc.

You don't sound like you want that. So it would be best for you to stay out or see if you can turn time back and get some of the original money before O and Tim and friends started asking for actual strings attached.

jarcher, I feel your pain.

You could apply for federal grant money to start a 12-step program to re-educate unemployed brokers who can't figure out who else to steal from now.

That's another good old scam, "trade schools" who will take anyone that qualifies for government grants, regardless of whether the program teaches any skills that will lead to real employment.

To think, all these years that I, too, boggled at the thought of "no income verification" mortgages, when I could have snagged a macmansion, pumped the equity machine, declared bankruptcy and sailed off with a half million or so in my pocket.

I've had it with ethics, I'm gonna do like Willy Sutton did and follow the money. Wanna come with? (VBG)

Most of the unemployed brokers are of military age and have been proven to have high testosterone levels. I think forward patrol in Afghanistan is calling - for the normal hazard pay, of course.

If you want to see how it REALLY is on Wall Street, try a quick and fun read of Wolf of Wall Street:

"By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could, on drugs, sex, and international globe-trotting. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht, crashed a Gulfstream jet, and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids who waited for him at home, and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king and did his bidding, here, in his own inimitable words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called…"

"BROKERS! EARN 8% COMMISSION TAX FREE IN THE UNREGULATED WAZIRISTAN EXCHANGE MARKET! Transportation and per diem expenses reimbursed at generous rates."

Hey...I'll bet they have no idea how THOSE customers are going to file grievances back at 'em. (VBG)

Yes, that was bad. I opposed that too. Of course, somehow the fact that Bush gave away 750 B is supposed to be a defense or a justification that Obama is looking to spend, what, 3.6 TRILLION! I love it how people gripe that Bush did something, then Obama does it even bigger and the answer is "Well Bush did it!" Wait, didn't congress vote to do it? Surely they had something to do with it... Which party controlled Congress for the past few years?

Yes, so the federal government is taking control of the biggest companies in the world, dictating who can get a bonus, who has to resign, how much people can be paid, and so on. Double points on this one. Obama and his cohorts get to bail out the big unions AND take over the economy at the same time! We all know how good government bureaucrats are at running the government, I just can't wait until they control my family's health care!

But, my favorite part thus far is the way they FORCED banks who didn't actually need or want TARP funds to take them anyhow, then a few months later decided that now they could enforce new and creative rules. Take a long time friend of mine who works at a large bank. They had to take the money. They may not give it back. Then, they were told that the CEO can't have his bonus. Bonus pool is slashed. My friend, who makes about $80k annually, looses a good chunk of her bonus, which is an ordinary part of her annual compensation. Okay, $80k annually is good money, but she is not exactly Bill Gates. She got the change she voted for.

True, maybe I can even avoid having people picket my house and making death threats against my family. The government gave money to some companies. Forced them to take it in some cases. They didn't make any rules on how it could be spent and, SUPRISE, they spent it how they wanted! Never saw that coming! Yet more evidence that government should stay out of business and the economy.

As for all this bonus nonsense, okay, people don't like it that bonuses were paid. I don't like it that money was doled out. Not even a little. But if the company is not going to go into bankruptcy, then they have a legal obligation to honor their contracts, and that means paying the bonuses. Just ask Chris Dodd, he was all for the bonuses. Or was he? maybe he was not? No, he was? Maybe he voted for it before he voted against it? Maybe we should ask him. Oh, wait, that won't work...

It was all just a diversion anyhow. What was it, $150 mil out of a few billion? The real issue is that we're moving very rapidly toward having the economy weighed down by fighting "global warming," replacing the world's best health care system with one that is mediocre and just generally enforcing "social justice" and making sure everything is fair. Maybe they can send send someone to fair may boat's keel. Hope and change people!

Uh, I hate to inform you of the difference, but....

The 750 BILLION was an emergency expense on top of Bush's 3.0 TRILLION dollar budget for his last year in office. There were also other emergency bills for the war (Bush DID NOT put these in the budget)...and also more debt (same as spending). Add those up....and that do you get?

The 3.5 Trillion dollar YEARLY budget for the government this year DOES include the cost of wars (again, BUSH would not do that), and also includes major stimulus for the economy.

Maybe you can explain the difference between
3.0 Trillion plus 750 billion plus War Emergency and debt
and
3.5 Trillion.

The point is simply this. If you were not crying out to impeach Bush for his "crimes" of spending too much, it falls on deaf ears to cry now. There is no one of sound mind who doubts that Bush and his friends got us into this mess. Now there are folks trying to get us out. Are they doing everything right? No way. We really don't know, since this is all uncharted territory. But you should CHEER the fact that Obama wants to put the ridiculous amount of money ABOVE BOARD because at least you know what it is and can make a better decision as to the future.

If I give you things and don't tell you what the cost is when the bill is coming later, I do you no favors.

Make no mistake, the Federal Budget is out of control. There are numerous reasons for this, but a good layman's guide would be as such.....

Reasons we are broke:
1. Military and Security Spending
a vast portion of the budget when all is figured in
2. Medical Costs
medicare and other programs which are subject to the same high costs as our health care - are breaking the government.

So, if you want to solve our budget problems in the long run, get out of Iraq and get smarter about wars (especially those for no reason), and fix the Health Care system FOR GOOD.

Oh, wait - Obama is doing just that! Listen closely. He gets it.

Or, just complain and think that money floats down from the heavens. Criticize everything and impeach the one guy who is trying to fix it. Replace him with Bush III. Then you will get what you want...total and utter destruction.
