JP, yes, Pakistan is a failed state. No education in democracy is called for to know that when a state has repeated armed insurrections and coups, and huge territories that refuse to recognize the alleged government, and no control over its own borders, according to that same alleged government, that it is a failed state.

I don't have to dictate the function of state in order to observe the success or failure of it.

Military juntas, total failure to exercise the most basic controls of sovereign borders, taxation, and authority over large areas...that's a failed state, but anyone's definition. That "state" has failed to assert sovereign controls, that's what "failed state" means.

Democracy? The world's oldest functioning one is arguably Iceland, going on over a thousand years back to Viking days. The American Experiment is still very much in progress, and that's also a Democratic Social Republic, not a democratic state at all. Democracies are rarely what people claim them to be. Ancient Rome was a democracy--but that didn't help the slaves much, did it?

As Franklin said after the first American nation was shut down in favor of a second and different government, "[the new one is] a republic, if you can keep it." It was never intended to be a democracy, much less the mobocracy it has become. 80% of the nation was never supposed to have the vote, the mob was seen as unfit to govern themselves.

One might be forgiven for the thought that the first century of the American experiment might be described as such?

Rome was a republic. Greece was a democracy.

Quite so.

I actually just read this note.... but, I have to say, this is a really good idea.

Why weren't people doing it when Bush was in office? They were bashing him from day one, and actually when he started running for office, calling him all sorts of things, implying he was stupid.

So - let's make it retroactive.

At first I couldn't understand the reference, but then I belly laughed for a long time after I saw the bumper sticker:

"Somewhere in Texas a village is missing an idiot."

Dubyah really was a horribly inept public speaker when he was first elected. Over the course of eight years he improved quite a bit. Or rather, his public speaking did.

If Obama saves us all, does that mean we'll all be reborn, just like Dubyah?

Here's the deal. We shut down Gitmo! Hurray! But we keep the policy of rendition where the CIA sends the prisoners off to Egypt or someplace where whether they get fed or not is hardly a concern. Now, that makes sense.

Angry Failed States (e.g.)

I heard mention a couple of times here of a failed state... Pakistan. Hope not because they have nukes and they're not like the half a pecker the North Koreans lit off. They really work.

If you want to see a failed state, go to Minnesota, where a clown and ACORN were able to steel the Senate seat. Also in Washington state the governorship was stolen in 2004 and they almost did it in Florida with the 2000 Presidency.

I'll just say the name: Illinois.

Until we fix (as in correct) our election system, we will always be a hanging chad away from a banana republic.

I don't like that "X"; throw that ballot out. Gee look at all the ballots I found here in my trunk and what do ya know they all voted for me. Yah OK...

Here's another vote from Micky Mouse.

We're all in for a long 4 years and with all the dim bulbs that say: "Why can't we all just get along" it'll probably be 8.

Have a happy, happy new year everyone.

Bailed Out BofA Gives $2M to ACORN
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 5:39 PM
Bank of America, one of the many banks to benefiting from a government bailout, is giving more than $2.1 million directly to the controversial interest group ACORN that engaged in fraudulent voter registration activities in the 2008 election.

The January 29 Chronicle of Philanthropy [subscription only] reported Bank of America's Charitable Foundation is giving the interest group $2,155,000 "for efforts to prevent foreclosures and educate people about finances and purchasing homes."

The gift is being made in four separate allocations, most of them going to Chicago--the city President Obama hails from. ACORN endorsed Obama in the 2008 presidential election and actively worked to elect him by conducting various get-out-the-vote activities. In the process of those activities ACORN submitted hundreds of fraudulent voter registration forms to local election offices.

Two of the grants, one for $2 million and another for $85,000 are being made to a Chicago ACORN corporation. Another, for $20,000, is being given to a Las Vegas chapter. And, $50,000 is being gifted to ACORN in Miami.
