Is this forum conservative? Why?

I'm not complaining. I'm pleasantly surprised. It seems that Sailnet has a conservative majority. I'm new here, but I've been on the Woodenboat forum for years. Their offtopic, appropriately called the Bilge, is radically left. I dont go there much, mostly because I'm here for the boats, partly because they don't tolerate dissent(hm). I was surprised that they are so far left, yet here, on a similar site, we lean right. I always thought sailors a practical, independant group. To me that inplies conservative values. Yet over there, they are far left. I wonder if it is because wooden boats are more the stuff of dreams?

conservative like to imagine that if you are independent you are conservative. Hogwash. But it is true that most of the people around here are right wing types. Not all though. And though the discussion can get kind of hot at times, I dont get the feeling that most are intolerant. They just have strong opinions. I think we would all get along if we met in person.

Star, we are Conservatives because we are lazy! It just takes to much energy and to many nights awake to figure out how to put a tax cheat in as the head of the Treasury.

I would agree with your guess about wooden boat owners. You have to be a dreamer who at some point commits to spending more time keeping your boat floating then using it. It wouldn't suprise me that they would want a world that is pretty in they're minds but a lot more work then needed for the job. Most of the wooden boat owners I've known leaned left.

Most definately. We can disagree about politics and still enjoy great sailing discussions.

Yes, the old farts here are decidedly right winged, which is why I try to avoid anything like religion or politics. To avoid being called a hippie communist godless heathen.

I just finished getting lectured that it's not a personal attack if it's true.

I actually wondered about the predominately conservative lean myself. It was my friendly liberal sck5 that speculated a year or so ago that the reason for it is that a lot of the fellows here worked long enough and hard enough to afford a boat and that when you've accumulated that kind of wealth, you get kind of protective of the government taxing it away from you. That may be a partial explanation anyway.
