In a lot of recent cases, it has just been the people being stupid or negligent, and the ocean being the ocean.

The conditions that Cam is reporting, 23 knots of wind and 3-4' seas is basically good sailing weather where I come from. Not quite sure how they managed to tear sails in those conditions, but most boats 28' and up would handle that kind of stuff with little or no trouble given a halfway competent crew.

I wonder if one investigated ocean rescues if it would be found that in most cases the ocean was being the ocean & people were still being stupid ???

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I think the point to realize is that triangulation does not always work well and that your method of dsc plus broadcasting lat/lon is the prefered method. knowing where you are is a good thing!!!
