Yes, PBzeer, I got that. And this is precisely why I found your reply amusing.
You, see, I never implied anything along those lines. It is a scary thought that we should dislike someone because of their politics. Beyond that, even in poltical debate I enjoy a true conservative as much as a convinced liberal; both have valid points. “We had dinner in the cockpit” is right up there with “my best friend is a homosexual/black.” (Not that you said any of those things). Why the hell would one not have dinner?
Some – I am not saying “all” – of the forum posts follow a different line. When an argument is peppered with characterisations like “lazy no-hopers who live off my taxes” or “sleazy bankers who scarpered with my superannuation” and move on to “whishy-washy liberals” and “rednecks” (none of these are actual quotes, but you’ll find worse on the forum – I seem to remember “old fart”), then someone is beginning to equate politics with person. From there to being personally offensive is a short step.
It is quite possible that it is only an anthill, and I won’t labour my points any more. I have flagged that the political forum introduces a tone including personal attacks that is different from SailNet as a whole, and I was not comfortable with it. But sure, I can stay away. Call me hypersensitive if you like.
