sck5 is on a distinguished road
republicans are doing poorly in upstate NY (which used to be a slam dunk republican part of the state) because the republican party in washington is viewed by many up here to be captive to a bunch of right wing religious nut cases who have done an extremely poor job of running the country. Of course, you may not agree but that is what they think.

I suspect that after the Repubs reinvent themselves in a couple of years whent they get tired of being spanked for saying the same tired old things decade after decade, then upstate NY will return to the repubs. But as it is, right now, their guys dont look so good, even to congenital dyed in the wool republicans.

The repubs may well win that seat anyway. But that it is even close is remarkable considering how conservative the district is.

Republicans aren't doing well because they ceased acting like republicans. You'll forgive me if I fail to take the liberal interpretation of their problems less than seriously. Just for your edification; the Reps have failed to enact anything of substantial interest to the religious right in the last quarter century or before. They nominated the least ideological candidate they possibly could for the Presidency in the last election and got creamed. All you are "hearing" is a popular spin on things from a media and voters who'll never vote Republican anyway. The rest of the conservative movement is awaiting a return to first principles. We're apathetic about both the party and its offerings.

Even a curusory examination of the '94 election would reveal that what put the GOP back in control of Congress was presenting a clear, understandable agenda based on conservative principles. What lost them that control was abandoning their principles.
