Bubb...I'm familiar with the facility at Ossining, though I do not recall seeing it from the river side. Once upon a time I had a friend who'd been incarcerated there. The friendship unfortunately ended over the mindset he seemingly acquired there.

I'm pretty sure I've been by it while on the Hudson but my memory is somewhat obscured by the more memorable fact that I was necking with a shipmate's sister in the sternsheets of his fishing boat at the time, as I recall, rather vividly I might add.

I think that people who spy do it for it's own sake, for a thrill, a feeling of importance. It's like a secret affair, and they tell themselves it's for a cause.
I hope that's it...they are addicted to the adrenaline rush, maybe. But for them both to have that commitment is unusual...it's like married serial killers (yes, I know they exist).

I also don't understand why supporting another country...for whatever reason...means betraying your own.

We recently had extended and frankly illegal protests by Tamil-ethnicity immigrants and Canadian-born people of Tamil background here in Toronto. I must say that irrespective of the points they cared to make about events in Sri Lanka contrary to their cause, that the constant use of the words "we the Tamil people" coming out of the mouths of (to judge by their youth and accents) Canadian-born people got on my nerves.

But it's not unusual. Many Jews identify with the state of Israel so strongly that they sometimes use the same language.

Of course, if Israel is a country and Judaism is a religion, does conflating the two make Israel a theocracy, like Iran and Vatican City?

Just a prediction - but, I think you will find this 'spy event' to be swept under the rug so to speak. Having read the news reports etc - amazingly the media did not drag up, nor make any case of severity due to their actions. In fact, it all read like a well thought out movie review. With the recent Obama administrations "reaching out policy", I think we'll be hard pressed to see this event in terms of vicious or at least sharing the same media banter that we have previously. In some cases it is almost laughable as "Cuban Spy" really doesn't have a ring to it and neither of the two at least from media accounts really gave them anything "secret". I am sure if it was the latter the media attention would be far more focused and the romantic overture would be lost in the stories.

During Obama's administration - I do believe that we will see in his tenure the lifting of the worthless embargo / travel restrictions.

Sing Sing as seen from Hook Mountain, across the Hudson River

Sing Sing Correctional Facility is a maximum security

This is what it looks like from the river. Sorry to hear that you were to "busy" to take in the view during your trip on the river. Not for nothing, it sits on 130 aces of river front. The state could sell the land to a developer and clear it's debit.

You know when people like these are brought up on charges and there is no "motive" (like money) and the people who are being put on trial are "the nicest people you would ever meet"; it really makes one wonder if they were brainwashed to do the things they have been accused of. It's not out of the realm of possibilities; although I know it falls under the banner of conspiracy theory (manchurian candidate type stuff).

Maybe that's why spies carry a cyanide pill; so the brainwashing tactics of their controllers will not be discovered. Nice of them to pre-program a self destruct button in eh?

Hey, I got my name in the Washington Post!

washingtonpost.com
Two check offs in the life experience category: meeting international spies, and my name in the Washington Post - front page - my 15 minutes of fame. (Somehow, I expected more when my turn for the fame thing came up. Ah, well, life is all downhill from here. Sigh)

Any attempt to incorporate the Rule of Three's into your project's estimates will result in a further tripling of your original estimate.

As a Viet-Nam veteran I have very little faith in the ability or the desire of our governments to always do the right thing!

I certainly can understand loving Cuba and Cubans and still have an active dislike for our respective governments.

Keep in mind that the efforts of the Rosenbergs probably prevented the USA from using nuclear weapons in Korea.

Traitors to the US, they probably were! Traitors to humanity, they probably were not! Sen loi. (Sorry about that)
