Cool Cuban Spies

Two friends of ours, two of the nicest people we've ever met, Kendall and Gwen have a boat on our dock. We've know them for years. They're in their 70's. Today, they were arrested. Who woulda thunk???

Federal Bureau of Investigation - The Washington Field Office: Department of Justice Press Release

There were FBI guys climbing in and out of their boat all day. These guys (They don't go around in t-shirts that say F B I) were confronted several times by people who worked here or liveaboards. (Including myself.) They would not identify themselves. There were two mechanics who got on board who had been contracted to work on the boat who were ordered off. At this point badges were flashed. The only thing they would say is that they had contacted the marina office. I checked, and they had.

Interesting day here at Hartge Yacht Harbor.

Holy Crap...you know those guys??!! Guess they were all in favor of opening up Cuba to Cruisers eh?

The details should be interesting when they all come out but it looks really bad right now for them both. They like Cuba...maybe we can send them to Gitmo...I hear there may be some openings in the cells there.

Damn. It must feel all a bit surreal for you!

I'm going to be giving all the retirees on my Marina suspicious sideways glances all day now...

Yet another confirmation of what a cigar smoker will do for a few good "Cubans"

Yes, send them to Gitmo; they will make good moving targets on the gun range. Sorry L&S McD but I have little sympathy for traitors (if they are proven guilty).

In cases like this, I always wonder what the motivation is. Frankly, they are too old to have been "Sixties radicals" and the man is alleged to have started being a spy around the age of 40. Was it just money? (I didn't know Cuba paid that well).

Unfortunately, someone with his security clearance and his position must've been one of the better investments Cuba ever made.

Can you imagine to what degree their boat will be dissembled? That vessel will never go on the market...it'll be in a "black landfill" out in the desert...eventually.

The boat is a Malo 37 which they purchased new two years ago. It was featured in Cruising World a couple of years ago as one of the 'boats of the year.'

One of the local dock humorists said he was surprised they didn't drive a '56 Chevy.

According to reports, they have pleaded 'not guilty.'

Like I said, these were very likable people. It's like they arrested Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Everybody who knows them finds the whole thing very hard to believe.

The article says they did it for love of Cuba. I wonder why then they didn't just move there?
I think that people who spy do it for it's own sake, for a thrill, a feeling of importance. It's like a secret affair, and they tell themselves it's for a cause.

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were likable people by all accounts also. They got the chair. Of course, we're not allowed to contemplate how much longer the Soviet Union survived and the genocides it was able to perpetrate by obtaining such early information on the construction of atomic weapons. The Myers should, upon conviction, spend the rest of their days in a place similar to Sing Sing where the Rosenberg's ended their lives. But then, the penalty for traitorous acts is not life imprisonment, is it?

Hey Sway, If you ever want to see Sing-Sing come out to visit. We can sail right past it. I will point out the sign on the shore that says "Do Not pick up swimmers."
