Let me further address the meme that because people think there are problems that need solved, that the proposed solution should be accepted.
I think most would agree that teenage pregnancy is a problem. So, what we'll do is force every male to save sperm (as soon as they are able to produce it), then castrate every one of them, and then pregnancy will only occur after filling out numerous government forms, passing a review board and being granted (at high cost) a license to withdraw sperm.
Problem (that most agree needs to be fixed) solved!
In other words, simply identifying a problem doesn't mean that any solution is acceptable.

Simple. Keep asking "Who is going to pay for it?" And when he gives you an answer, repeat the question, sometimes with emphasis shifted to one of the other 6 words in that sentence.
So if he says "Taxes will pay for it."
say "WHO is going to pay for it?"
..and so on. Don't let up.
Since he really can't answer that question (because it's you that will pay), it stops him.
Regards,
Brad
P.S. Same thing, only ask "Who will have the power to decide life or death" ..."WHO??" ..."Who specifically? Name the person. Which bureaucrat? What is his/her phone number?"
[EDIT: added last few words above]

Bad example. Teen pregnancy is on the decline.

However, I agree that difficult problems do not require draconian scorched earth solutions, but they do require solutions. The status quo is not a solution.
When it comes to health care, does anyone even agree on what the problem(s) is/are?
Is it that health care is too expensive?
Is it that health insurance is too expensive?
Is it that too many people don't think about health insurance until it is too late?
Is it that people have expectations that exceed fiscal reality?
Is it that health care is not a right, but a privilege?
Is it that health care is not a privilege, but a basic right?

When one considers that the current proposals are political, rather than economic (which any way you frame it, IS the problem) then you approach the question with the proper perspective.
And, just as an aside bljones, why is it you only see health care as a privilege or a right? It's neither, it's a service, provided by another person to which no one has any more "right" to than they do to any service provided by another person. Regardless of how "necessary" you define the service.

PB, I understand your point, but in my opinion your opinion that health care as a "service" is different from a "privilege" doesn't fly. If you consider healthcare a service it puts health care on the same level as telecommunications and utilities and cable tv - nice to have but not a necessity. I can understand that opinion. My opinion is that a service is a privilege if it is not available equally to all.
Okay, so you don't like the word privilege. How about "option" or "frill" or "luxury"? Does it really change the philosophical argument if we play semantics?

Anything provide by another person, or entity, IS a service. It does not exist unless there is someone capable of, and willing to, provide that service. That's not semantics. That's not spin, It's not even my opinion. That's by definition.

Thank you for your definition. I agree with you. However, " Anything provide(d) by another person, or entity, IS a service. It does not exist unless there is someone capable of, and willing to, provide that service" does not preclude a service being a privilege. Your opinion that a service is not a privilege is where we part ways. Look, like I said above, instead of privilege, would you prefer "option" or "frill" or "luxury"?
In any event, setting the wordplay aside, you feel that what health care is NOT is a right, correct?
