In all your research, have you ever found someone who fought-off AK47-wielding/RPG-toting pirates with a shotgun?
Yes! The 12-gauge shotgun loaded with 00-buckshot was the weapon of choice by a lot of folks that were fighting in the Mekong Delta. The VC were packin' AK-47s and RPGs. Check the ballistics--that load of 00-buck has an overall range of nearly a half-mile. It's not very accurate, but those 16 pellets are all heading in your direction at one time, Makes for a real bad day. A 12-gauge, 1-ounce, rifled slug, particularly the Sabot type, has an incredible range, and they're extremely accurate. They'll punch a hole in you the size of a beer can.
As for the legalities of packing a 12-gauge shotgun and a .22 handgun, you'll probably encounter more restrictions in the U.S. than most of the countries you visit.
Unfortunately, you will likely have to do an enormous amount of online research to determine how to conform to the regulations in each country you visit, and the territorial waters of those that you pass through.

Um... no.
Let's look at just this hemisphere:
Canada will confiscate your weapons and may deny entry
Bahamas, ditto.
Barbados, ditto.
Cuba, ditto, with the possibility of incarceration, boat confiscation and a fine.
Mexico, ditto.
Caymans, Turks and Caicos, DR, Grenada, BVI, ditto.
Haiti? Who cares?
All of the above is based on personal experience, post 9/11.

Duckwheat, personally I think it a bad idea, you are too cranky to have a gun; just my opinion, I know you don't want it. That does not make my opinion wrong.
Have your police chief call me when you apply for a carry permit.
Please.
Good guys ( and honestly many are great men and women) who have had to shoot to kill or maim another human usually doubt and relive that minute for the rest of their lives. Their burden is one we can never understand and one no thinking individual would take on easily.
Pray for the cops and soldiers who had to or believed they had to pull the trigger. Whether they were right or wrong in the moment, they live with it for a lifetime.
But back to you-----
If you need to prepare to fight off Somolian pirates, get a gun. In fact, get lots of guns.
If you are willing to shoot a kid looking for a handheld radio, gps receiver, canned goods or your dvd collection, get a gun.
You want a gun; this is America - get a gun. Sail away, fly your US flag, hang onto you gun.
If you feel obligated use your gun, depend on local lawyers, don't bother all of us back here please.
Somewhere along the line get this through your head - it does not matter if someone else had a "hassle" or not.
No one serious about a firearm will use it unless the aim is to kill.
The best part of sailing is the distance it is from killing - sailing is life.
Guns ain't.
You are in the wrong forum dude.
How about Washington, DC - possession is a felony
New York City - Possession is a felony
Baltimore City - Impossible to get a carry permit
The list is endless...Take your pick--no good options, though.
If you plan to go into Somali waters definitely take a weapon.
A shotgun would be a good choice. but Molotov cocktails would be even better.
Shoot this is America get both.
I know I would if I were going there.
because if you are boarded and kidnapped I don't want to even think about what you would go through as a hostage. So fighting (since you are already dead) really is the only choice.
Now to your question. I am sure many people sail with weapons. consensus I've seen in my readings is that Americans new to cruising carry weapons but later get rid of them due to hassles in port. The others that you don't hear or know about simply don't talk about it.
I am willing to bet there are more guns out there than anyone would consider. People just don't talk about it.
tsk tsk Jones ... not only have you commented on our OP's thread without the necessary circumnavigational qualities but now you choose to mock. tsk tsk
Might I remind you all that this thread is restricted to gun totin' circumnavigatorums. The rest of you please shhhhh !!

Same question posted elsewhere, with the same attitude and pretty much the same answers. Maybe if you ask enough different places someone will give you the answer you want to hear.
Like I said elsewhere, sailed all over the Caribbean with guns on board and it was a hassle. This is first hand, personal experience, did it myself information, no opinion involved. Sorry I can't report this as the circumnavigator you require but for me, getting harassed in one part of the world is enough. I don't need to repeat the experience in 20-30 more countries to be sure. Plus the Jamaican police now have a really nice S&W that I will never see again.
