"The Patriot" revisted
In the Mel Gibson Movie "The Patriot", I thought it was kinda funny what some of the opening lines were at the town meeting. When he said, "Why trade one tyrranist a thousand miles away for a thousand tyrranist's one mile away." or something to that effect.
Anywhoo,
Geat movie! All the way through!

Lots to like about the movie. What I liked was that Benjamin's pragmatism ended up costing him incredibly important chunks of his life.
And the line goes:

Why would I trade one tyrant a thousand miles away for a thousand tyrants one mile away? A legislature can trample a man's right as easily as a king can.

This was a huge concern for the "average" person in that era which is why they came up with a system of government that was base-indivdual. THe US was not founded on majority rule.

There is no answer to that question that would not be construed as abuse.

I would expect no less from you, and it's why I argued you should not moderate.
With all due respect of course. Maybe one day we can have a meeting of the minds.....

Well, no, not all of it.
You see, as one who has had the pleasure of actually fighting one of our "glorious" wars and come home with two Purple Hearts and 3 stripes, this glorification of blood and combat was akin to torture.
Boys, it ain't like it looked in the movie. As it happens I spent last weekend at a reunion of my combat outfit from Viet Nam. We remembered the chaos, the horror. Virtually 100% of us were wounded, many massively. Most of us live off Veterans' disabilities: head wounds, missing limbs, but most of all just plain crazy. Our brothers have taken their own lives at over twice the rate of the general public.
You - or your parents or grandparents - called us, and we went. This weekend I was blessed to see the most courageous soldier I ever saw in combat. He was no stinking Mel Gibson. He was terrified, just like all the rest of us, but he stood up to his fear and to the 32nd Regiment of the North Vietnamese Army and saved a bunch of lives anyway.
He's got what looks like an asterisk indented into his forehead where the mortar got him. Mine's behind my ear, and all the way down my left side.
A friend invited me to go see this "great" movie. I spent half of it squirming in my chair like a man being tortured. The second half in the lobby holding my head. Two days later I stumbled into an aisle of tv's in a retail store all showing the same damnable movie. The next morning I decided to kill myself.
Fortunately for me, the VA (another government program opposed by many Conservatives) was able, by counseling and lifelong medication, to persuade me to stick around.
And btw, I was decorated for valor in combat myself. I had the courage to face an armed regiment over and over, and the courage to fight on even after they overran our position, just not the courage to face Mel Gibson's ultra-phoney glorification of war.

Junkrig,
I can't thank you enough for your service! My heart and prayers are always with special tenderness for Viet Nam Vets, it was the war of my youth, I'm 50. I was 13 in the stands, waiting for class, crying to God for each and every one of our boys in Nam. to Please bring you home!
My half brother went, Army, he came back too, I thank God. I'm sorry for what you went through over there.
Please know how precious you, and every Viet Nam Veteran, all of our Veterans of all our wars are, But for me Viet Nam Vets are especially precious!
I am For all VA services, and feel nothing is too good for our Vets!
My heart breaks at the suicide rate of our Vets, God help us all!!
What can I do to help?
