Since they didn't bother to ask anyone if a more progressive tax system makes them happier, all their methodology has "proven" is that subjective responses indicate that people are happier who happen to live in countries with more progressive tax systems, thus, ipso facto, it is the progressive tax system that makes them happy. Not exactly "empirical evidence".

it just as well could be that re-runs of "Leave it to Beaver" and "I love Lucy" being broadcast in countries with progressive tax structures. They should study that to see if it correlates.

By this I mean - do the right wingers oppose government spending in principle or is it just an attitude that they (government) are, and will remain, unable to operate and deliver services in an efficient, cost effective manner so the delivery must remain in private hands?

government inefficiency;

local problems, local solutions;

concerns on size and scope of federal government;

track record of previous government programs that just keep growing and growing, even when they are no longer needed or useful;
