It's not terribly surprising really, Mormons have a thing against all drugs - including alcohol, tobacco, coffee, & tea. Legalising marijuana as a conservative candidate is political suicide in the first place, claiming to support it when it is also blatantly against his religion was never going to happen.
I sympathise with the guy in the wheelchair, I support legalising & regulating marijuana like other drugs, but that situation was a blatant setup and Romney handled it the way politicians always do. Offered a non-committal opinion that didn't support a policy which would kill his campaign that didn't also outright condemn the sick man and reaffirmed that particular part of his platform (his "I don't support medical marijuana" statement).
With the possible exception of Ron Paul, you're not going to get a serious Republican Presidential candidate who supports legalising marijuana. It flies in the face of their constituent's beliefs and therefore is not going to win votes. Expecting anything else probably requires substantial amounts of medical marijuana
