That was then, this is now
On Thursday evening, Senator Reid invoked the "Nuclear Option", whereby, with a simple majority vote, the rules of the Senate can be changed. In the link that follows, you can hear, from their own mouths, what many of the Democrats that voted for Thursday, had to say about it in 2005, when it was only hinted at by the GOP.

Why did Reid feel this was necessary? Because, after weeks of hearing "Pass this Bill now!" from the President, Senator McConnell tried to bring it up for a vote in the Senate. The problem for Reid is simple, there is bi-partisanship on this bill ... against it. So Reid was faced with the choice of changing the rules, or losing the vote.
Reid was already using procedural gimmicks to stop a vote (it's called filling the amendment tree), and when that failed, all he had left was the nuclear option.
No doubt, some will say the nuclear option was used on something different than it was proposed to be used in 2005, but that doesn't really matter here, because both the proposed use, and the actual use were about disenfranchising the minority.
