It's a funny dichotomy how knowledgeable, sensible and rational Paul can sound, especially when his comments are being discussed by others but when you listen to him speak he comes off as pretty looney.
In this case he is absolutely correct - the U.S. and British conspiracy to depose Mossadegh and install the Shah for the oil companies led almost linearly to the revolution and hostage taking. It was the match being struck on a 25 year fuse. The disasters caused by those lunatic Dulles brothers are STILL reverberating. Iran, Guatemala, Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua and on and on - everything they touched turned to disaster. The two of them were responsible for what was probably the most shameful era ever in U.S. foreign policy. And now they have airports and government buildings named after them.

Stalingrad..The victors write the History books.
Lighting the fuse 25 years ago.. I think you could go back to the Crusades or WW-One. Lawrence of Arabia..England and the Allies promised the Arabs that they would end thier colonialism of the Middle East, if the Arabs would agree to join the Allies and help fight the Ottaman Empire and Germany.
After the WAR. The Allies split the M. E. between England and French interests. General Lawrence of Arabia spoke up for the Arab Nations.feeling upset that he had double crossed the Arabs. The British Govt never had any intentions of returning the MIddlle East to its PRe-Crusasde borders.
Lawrence OF Arabia spent the last 11 years of his life fighting to payback the Arabs for thier hep in WW-ONe. defeating Germany.
Its a long story, Read the book for all the details..

I believe he was COLONEL Lawrence at the end, not General. He was an extremely eccentric, well intentioned, academic dreamer who was used by all sides during WWI. There is a scene near the end of the movie that captures it well - as Lawrence leaves the room, Alec Guinness, playing King Saud, calls after him "What I owe you is beyond measure" then he says to General Allenby "Lawrence is a sword with two edges, I think we are equally glad to be rid of him". I've never seen anything in my reading that describes this scene so it may just be Hollywood but it sure captured the situation after the war. He was simply a tool of the higher powers.
I agree the history of interference and betrayal of the Middle Eastern countries by the big powers goes back a LONG way but Iran was a situation with a very specific cause and effect, just as Paul describes.

I never saw the Movie.. I used to subscrie to Covert Action Information Bulletin. CAIB warns that Hollywood has a bad habit of Pentagon and State Department scripting & cencorship. Phycological Brain Washing..
I wil watch the movie and let you know how it compares to CAIB and the Recent History Channel version of Lawrence of Arabia..
In any WAR, the first casulty is always the truth..

Make sure you see an unedited version of it - it is one of the absolute greatest movies ever made. Spectacular cinematography and some roles that were the height of great actors careers. You are in for a treat.
Be sure to get back with your comparison - sounds interesting. I doubt that any U.S. institutions would care about that story since the U.S. wasn't involved in that theater of WWI.

There is a lovely, old (circa 1900) yacht club at the east end of Lake Ontario to which John Foster Dulles belonged - he had a summer home there. One of their trophies was donated by him/named after him. No idea what we sailed.
A Lawrence of Arabia comment, had a chance to visit an area of southern Jordan called Wadi Rum where the film was made (and the events happened!). The narrow gauge railway is still there. Spectacular, bleak scenery to be sure. I would recommend a visit to Jordan for anyone who is in the area - much to see and very friendly people. Tough neighbourhood though - their neighbours are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, West Bank, and Israel. A little bit of Israel that reaches the Gulf of Aqaba means that Egypt is about 5 miles away.
And now back to our regularly scheduled programming ...

I think I'll just watch "Lawrence" again thanks. I'd feel safer visiting the local crack ghetto. The temperature never gets near 120 there either.
