Oh the hipocrisy

Millionaires who want their taxes raised don't want to pay more into the treasury. This makes me think they actually don't want a real tax increase for themselves, just an increase for everyone else.

So, let me understand this. A group of rich people stage a press conference to proclaim their desire to encourage the enactment of higher taxes on themselves and others in the same financial circumstances. Some high strung chick with an Ipad comes up and asks them if they want to do something entirely different and they are hypocrites because they told her no?
Sorry I don't see it.
Do you or anyone else know for a fact that they don't already donate to the treasury? She never asked that question. She only tried to get them to enter their credit card number on her Ipad on the spot.
How does anyone know how they donate their money now?
Is this journalism?
TropicCat, jackdale and BentSailor like this.

So, who here is willing to put the name on their credit card, credit card number, expiry date, and security code into a stranger's iPad?

Better yet, just PM me that information. Trust me.

Meanwhile, I have nice bridge for sale.

The only thing that's entirely different is that in one case the donation would be voluntary, the other it would be coerced. If they feel so strongly that they are not paying their fair share, why wouldn't they want to pay their fair share voluntarily? Why wait until you're forced?

I agree that I wouldn't want to put my CC info into a strangers ipad, but the right answer would have been that they already make voluntary contributions to the IRS. Why advocate forcing others to do what you are unwilling to do voluntarily?

I suppose they are looking to effect a real difference as opposed to making a symbolic gesture. A few fingers in the dyke is a waste of energy, a few hundred thousand could be construed as part of a plan.
We'll likely disagree on the validity of the plan but we'll agree that voluntary taxation is probably not workable in any society.

So what does a "real difference" look like? 3% of the deficit? That's what the "Patriotic Millionaires" are calling for. Would Taxing the Super-Rich Raise Much Revenue? - The Wealth Report - WSJ

Quote:
In 2008, there were 236,883 tax filers reporting income of $1 million or more. The Patriotic Millionaires, a group advocating the repeal of the Bush tax cuts on tax filers making $1 million or more a year, estimated that their plan would raise $500 billion to $600 billion over 10 years. That sounds like a lot.

But only $100 billion of that is projected savings from lower government debt costs. So the tax would actually raise $40 billion to $50 billion a year: equal to about 3% of the annual federal deficit.
How is 3% not just a symbolic gesture? I don't think that voluntary taxation is a valid plan, but if you're calling for an increase in the taxes on millionaires, and you are a millionaire, shouldn't you already be doing your part?
