Tarpon Basin, Key Largo (bayside). Fl. Pretty good protection, holding better in north west ? basin, official dingy dock in park like setting. Water tap and dumpster available. about 20 min walk to publix, walmart, library, ups. Bike ride to west marine but ace hardware nearby. Several restaurants. Propane
refill about mile away. Nearby bus to Homestead (then tx to Miami) or south
to Marathon. Free pump out! No diesel tho.

What is the controlling depth there? I seem to recall it is shallow. Any air draft issues?

Re: provisioning stops

The absolute primo stop on the West Erie Canal is Newark, NY.
- free tie up will accommodate any size boat for two days
- free 30A
- free water
- free showers and restrooms (super clean)
- drum roll... free laundry!

Within four blocks
- Save-a-lot grocery store
- two gas stations with diesel and propane
- NAPA auto store
- Rite-Aid pharmacy
- Restaurants (we rarely use em)

Walmart two mile walk. Walgreens and lots more less than one mile. Only potential downside is no marine supply store.

Re: provisioning stops

Great Bridge, VA (ICW mile 12, approx) if you're going Virginia Cut instead of Dismal Swamp. Free wall (no power or electric). Walking distance to full grocery and laundry, many restaurants.

I'll second the recommendation for Doyle's anchoring guides, and I understand he's working on a book of exactly what xort seems to be trying to build in this thread - free or nearly free walls and town docks.

Wing,
not so much free walls and town docks but places that have great access to provisioning. Great Bridge is one of them but, for example, I wouldn't include the Portsmouth, Va free dock here. We love stopping there but not for provisions, too far.
Thnx

Re: provisioning stops

Will try and bring the best of old thread over to this minus the annoyingly active ****.

We'll see if it can be done relatively seemlessly. Will delete this post when its done but give me time.

All yours Xort.

Not much use to me down here but undoubtedly a great thread. I know when we are out and about we'll spend as long as possible away from civilisation but when we need provisioning you want the right place to stop.

Re tarpon basin. The depths are officially 5-6 near the dinghy dock, 7-8 further out.
Only bridge nearby ( heading south from Miami) is jewfish creek at mile 1135 with a 67 ft clearance.

Re: provisioning stops

thanx xort, we'll think of some more places that were cool. But yeah, many times we stayed in inexpensive marinas. For provisioning from anchorages, Deltaville, VA; Oriental,NC worked, we'll post more info tomorrow.

Newport, RI

Newport is VERY expensive. Slips run around $4/ft and more and moorings are $60. But there are 2 decent anchorages and 4 dink docks for access. The one anchorage is usually crowded and the second can get rolly exposed to the prevailing winds.
There is a Stop n Shop and hardware store about a half mile from one of the dink docks. There is a Super Stop n Shop about a mile away with walmart, hardware & marine supplies in the same general area. They have a float in the harbor you tie up to for filling water tanks. Plus the town is quite a sight to see. Bikes come in very handy for that.
