Tablets and Charting

Well first of all my apologies for what must be a well discussed subject.
I am up to speed on the ipad with 3/4G and it's ability to use as a chartplotter without a wifi or data connection.
My question is: Has anyone have or had experience with the non apple products tablets? Do any offer the same capabilities? If so could I ask your opinion or advice?
And if there is a more proper place for this post, please direct me there.
Oh, Just for the record. I do not intend to use it as a primary or even secondary source of navigation. I currently have a laptop with opencpn and a usb gps antenna. It is on it's last leg and I want to consider a tablet to replace it.
Thanks Lee

You already are familiar with opencpn. So the answer to your question is obvious: install the android version of opencpn on your tablet. It's on the google playstore.

Problem solved!

Re: Tablets and Charting

Did you do a search here? There was a long thread on this topic not that long ago. Read it.

Best tablet for sailing

Why did you put this in the Provisioning section?

If you like using OpenCPN on a Windows laptop, then you might consider replacing it with a Windows tablet. There are hundreds of them out there at prices that are very competitive with Android. Everyone thinks of the Microsoft Surface as the only option, and I assure you there are very good Windows tablets at 1/10 the cost.

My favorite one for OpenCPN is the Lenovo Miix2 8" model. It has one of the brightest screens I've seen, and with a matte finish screen protector to knock out the glare it's viewable in full daylight. It also has a built-in GPS, but you'll need some free 3rd party software to make it work with OpenCPN. Miix2-8" has been discontinued by Lenovo, but there are new ones still available.
