Isn't the Kirkland tinned chicken (like most tinned chicken in the US) something like $8 per pound?

I've always been reluctant to spend 10x the price of fresh chicken just to try it out.

The canned meats aren't cheap. But if I eat a "fresh" chicken after a week at sea I'll need a medevac. And thousands for a freezer aboard would buy a lot of canned chicken.

I'll go with the smoked sausages from Krakus Deli in Baltimore. He grinds, seasons and smokes on premises. I live in Kentucky and I place an order every month or so. When you walk int his store the Kielbasa and the hunters sausages are hanging all over the place at room temp. I've left them out in my kitchen for a month with no problems.

It is the best sausage that I've ever eaten. The Polish also like (love) garlic. As an added benefit to their products you may rest assured that vampires will leave you alone. They have a webpage and you can order online. He also accepts Paypal.

One small warning, If you try to call him to order I hope you speak Polish because his english is not very strong. Good Luck.

Well, only if you don't wash them and pluck them before eating them.

Livestock? Check the foc'sle, I'm sure there's something we can spare you. (G)

I wonder how the price of live chickens compares to tinned chicken meat?

Good advice on the sausage, we have a substantial Polish community on LI. I probably can find these foods here. One of the crew is bringing a salted leg of lamb. Now I just need some hardtack......
Oh yeah, we call those "chickens" you pluck underway "seagulls", and they taste lousy.

Personally ............ LOL All kidding aside I use canned meat almost exclusively for storage ability. I have sailed all over the north Atlantic, southern Europe and the Carribbean and guess who I have found to be my least expensive supplier of universally available canned goods. Come on ... Guess ...... ;o)

Would you believe WALMART .......... LOL. I have bought Tyson canned chicken in France, Hormel canned beef in Chile and the USA (canned in Brazil ... )

My best source of quality meats is "Mother Nature". Specifically, I troll for fish while sailing and I keep an eye out for specific species, especially Tuna. I have had excellent success fishing for Albacore, Yellow Fin and Salmon not to mention the various kinds of Mackerel. Plus I have learned about local species such as rock fish and halibut in Alaska and Cod in Maritime Canada. I could go on and on but cruising doesn't have to be a headache.

Happy Sailin;
G.

Easy to make.

Flour mixed with water into a dough, then just shape it and bake it on a very low temperature until it solidifies into a rock. It's more of a dehydrating process than a cooking process, really. If you've ever accidentally gotten bread dough on something and then had it dry there you know just how solid it can become. Flour keeps a long time once you've turned it into a solid, easily transported, not so easy to cook with because you have to crush it up. I am sure you could make hardtack without heat, just make it relatively thin and dry it in a window somewhere.

I know this isn't canned meat, but I have to recommend it because it is good tasting and a really good value.

Great value beef jerky from Walmart!

Runs about 9.48$us/12oz here, about 0.79$us/oz. Hard to beat that price, keeps for a long time. I have on occasion used beef jerky more as a seasoning for things I am cooking than as an actual meat portion in a meal, cut into small pieces it makes a good baked potato topping, etc, used like bacon bits.

I just read this whole thread and found it informative between wiping tears off my face from laughing so hard. It brings back memories of Tulip brand bacon from Denmark, sardines on toast or crackers and fried Spam or Prem with eggs. Of course nothing beats fresh meat - remember that long thread about cruising with bulldogs......
