Nail, I read about campers who dehydrate hamburger by mixing 1/2 cup bread crumbs with 1 pound of hamburger then heating in a skillet until it browns. Next blot the grease off of it by letting it sit on a paper towel then dehydrate it in a food dehydrator. The bread crumbs make the hamburger tender when it rehydrates in your chili. Edit - you have to use lean beef for this, 93/7 recommended.

1. Canned anything varies by brand. The grocery store brand may have been the same as the costco, or maybe not. Might be worth trying the kirkland variety. Didn't taste like tuna ta me!

2. all of the little cheeses mentioned are hellaciously expensive in the grocery store. if you try them and like them costco (again...) has them in medium bulk size very reasonably. I began using them for school lunches and could not afford them at safeway prices, but at costco it was pretty reasonable.

3. It's not as hard as it sounds. buy or borrow a pressure canner (if you haven't got one) and wait until the meat you like in your chili comes on sale. Buy it, cook it and can it. Better and cheaper than anything in the stores. Or even better to my way of thinking; Make your chili and can that. even easier onboard to just open the jar and heat. my chili tastes just like its out of the pot when I can it. grated cheese and sourcream and we are good to go!

I've started canning hamburger and chicken now, and Sarafinadh is right, it really is easy and actually kind of fun. The hamburger turned out really good. First oil lamps, now canning hamburger, I eagerly await Sarafinadh's next post to see what she will teach us next.

well, lets see.. I have a REALLY neat trick with old lipstick... gets a bit gummy over time, but if it's a colour I love I just melt a chunk of it in the microwave with a chunk of lipbalm and then pour it back in the lipbalm tube!

hows that for a cool sailing trick? SPF 40 lipbalm tinted my favorite colour!

*grin*

Is it in the microwave longenough to sterilize it? Last I'd heard, lip stick and balm were great places to breed things as they got old enough. "gummy" sounds like gone a bit too far.

nuker boils it up good, never had a problem. personally I think the whole "throw it away" deal is so the make up companies can sell more product. I have shadows I have used for over a decade that are fine. I am careful to keep my brushes and applicators clean and don't share. occasionally I have had something go bad, but it's easy to tell when that happens. it looks weird and smells off.

Should we open a thread about cruising makeup and lipbalm? I think there is already one on sunscreen!

I can only wonder if that wasn't the product of some hardcore stoners who couldn't find White Castle late one night:
"Dude, wouldn't it be awesome if you cold, like, you know, just open a can and take a cheeseburger off the shelf? And not have to go out for it?"
"Whoa, dude, sure, I could do that!"
"Bet you can't"
"Bet I can!"
And when someone woke up, they figured out how to sell it.

Still...I can't help thinking, a tinned cheeseburger has to be made for the folks who think White Castle (and McBurger) really are hamburgers. That ain't what gets served with my Guinness!
