I find most of the canned red meat disgusting. I like the canned chili and stews better. I most prefer canned fish (anykind) and chicken. There is also a variety of danish canned bacon that is wonderful.

While sailing I tend to rely on the fish and crab I catch for meat. Nothing better than fresh fish!

For a long passage you need to take off the paper labels and mark the cans with a grease pencil to ID them. This can be laborious, so it's OK to use abbreviations. There's not enough space to print "chicken breasts", so "hen tits" will do.

Some good advice in these posts. We prefer Albacore tuna packed in water, any brand. For provisioning we use http://www.internet-grocer.net/product.html . Spam ranks right up there with Vegimite ... people either love it or hate it.

There are a handful of independents in the US like

http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/can...anned_beef.asp

and

http://www.foodservicedirect.com/ind...pared_Beef.htm

who actually can meats, or resell them, but you won't find those products in the supermarkets, you'll have to mail order them directly. I've heard some folks say they like the product but then again...some folks also like spam. Who knows.

In the US you will more readily find MRE's from military/camping suppliers; various freeze dried meals from camping stores; and of course a good hard salami or other "shelf stable" product from any good "german deli". A couple of companies sell similar products (often nowhere near the quality, certainly no cheaper) in supermarkets.

As a nation, we're not big on "tinned beef". And if you see the Underwood brand tinned meat spreads...they're easy to find, but if you don't like Spam, you probably won't like them either.

Our version of shelf-stable protein is peanut butter and jelly.

Spam has a bad rep, but it's always been a favorite of mine,- fried for breakfast...sandwiches for lunch.....I'm blessed with a vulgar palette, so many things are so good! 'take care and joy, Aythya crew

try "grabill country meats" they come in small 2 serving cans. I bought a sample pack and will let you know the taste tomorrow. I have been looking for a small can. I sail single or two and dont need a 80 oz canned meat. Hopefully this is it.

Good old fashioned Country ham, salted pork with flavor - you can make your own and hang it anywhere on board. Leave a hunk hanging in the galley area an simply carve off dinner.
Makes wonderful sandwiches, stews, breakfast meat etc - and all you need to make it is a hook, salt and pepper and a piece of pig. I crew up dirt assed poor - we killed, cut and hung a pig a year under our trailer . Maybe it was our pig, maybe we found it

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
