Simon-

Try the canned corned beef (in the rectangular tins, not the mushy 'hash with bits of potato'). Not bad; they sell it in a 6-pack at Costco.

For bread; Mestemacher pumpernickel is excellent! Of course you must like whole grain rye bread. Normally I don't care for whole wheat but pumpernickel is great. It has an un-opened expire date of nearly 12 months; with no preservatives! They sell several other varieties; Longs Drugstores sell it (on sale this week IIRC). Tortillas are compact and keep well too; but you might want to freeze some for the long-term.

BTW- with all of that meat; the rye bread will help keep you "regular" Simon!

I second MRE's as an alternative, but you will need water, and make sure you balance the cheese and the peanut butter, or you will either be constipated the whole trip or have the runs the whole trip . Seeing how you want to single hand part of the trip down the coast I would just get stuff to wrap up in tortillas, peanut butter, chicken, tuna and some beef jerky for snackin.

D
I was born a po' why child, as in why another child.

The pig wasn't alway's pig, and wasn't always roadkill neither, which isn't to say that sometimes it might not have been.
It was food.

The trailer was a 1970's 3 bedroom 14x70 ft IIRC.

At times we had 3 or more 'pigs' hanging from the cross beams. We never lacked for meat.

Comedy aside, country ham is good stuff.

I hear ya Chuck. We poke fun but in all seriousness being poor is not fun especially if you are a parent and have more mouths than your own to feed. It sounds like yours were resourceful enough to keep food on the table, keep you out of trouble, gain enough financially to afford a nice boat (among other things I'm sure). It's good to hear a success story like yours; too many times people remain 'trapped' in poverty; and all the bad stuff that goes with it. I know; a segment of my family is in that situation...

Here is a winner for me. There are canned roast beef available that are usually labeled product of Argentina. I highly recommend them. I think it says parboiled on the can as well. Over rice.

Parboiled. Roast. Beef.

There's got to be a couple or three oxymorons in there.

I have been buying Spam Light recently, tastes even better than regular spam IMHO (less greasy, fries up nice) with 1/3 the fat. When my wife and I start cruising around the lakes (great lakes that is) I'm all set. She can't stand it though, but she likes tuna.
