Maybe it is just me, but it seems like the flavour has changed, and there is more of an astringent aftertaste in the bottle that I had in June 2012, compared to the bottle I had in June 2011.
That is what put me off buying another bottle.

It is the hipster rum that jumped the shark.

Try Sailor Jerry. New kid on the block, but damn tasty for a spiced rum. Plus it's 92 proof.

Re: Rum enjoyment

I dont know if this one has been mentioned yet on this thread, but the other day I had some Kirk and Sweeney 12 years old. Its probably the first rum I have ever enjoyed drinking neat. It had the subtle qualities of a good scotch.

Re: Rum enjoyment

Add another vote for Ron Zacapa:

A 23-year old Guatamalan rum.

I'm a die-hard scotch whisky drinker, or at least I was until a 'friend' turned me on to this last summer.

I wouldn't mix it with anything. It's like angels dancing on your tongue!

I've been drinking Mt. Gay with coke/lime or Mt Gay over ice ever since.
Similar thing happened to us several years ago flying Toronto to Barbados. During the 5.5 hr flight we enjoyed several of those 2-glass wine bottles served by airlines so by the end of the movie I was probably not hearing too well anyway. I stood up and chatted with a black guy in the row ahead. He had a very nice golf shirt that had "Barbados" written in small type. Not liking loud and wordy shirts I asked where I could buy one. Turns out he was with the Bajan consulate in Toronto and they had bought the shirts in Canada for an event. So I then picked his brains about best eateries beaches and rum in Barbados. "Monkey rum" was what I heard and when I questioned it he said "no mon...MOUNT GAYYYYY"

on our second trip there in 2011 we discovered Mt Gay Eclipse Black = 100 proof and the smoothest rum ever. yesterday I finally found it in one of our Toronto liquor stores...not cheap but cheaper than 11 hours on a plane.

I sip it str8...no cola / soft drink pollution

Re: Rum enjoyment

Mmmm! Rum! My favorite!

Right now in my cupboard I have:

Ron Zacapa 23 - a nice sipper with a splash of water
Mount Gay XO - a sipper for when I want something less sweet
Cruzan Single Barrel - one of my favorite sippers. That's the one I pull out to introduce scotch drinkers to rum.
Flor De Cana 18 - very tasty, but a bit pricey.
Appleton Reserve-Can be sipped or mixed. You can never go wrong with Appleton products!
Cruzan 9 Spiced - meh- don't think much of it, but I will bury it in coke! Not a fan of spiced.
Cruzan Blackstrap - Pretty tasty black rum. Makes the best Rum 'n' Egg Nog I have ever tasted!
Havana Club 7 - I've had it for a long time because I really don't like it! Don't even like serving it to others!
El Dorado 15 - Very nice! If you like the Zacapa, try this one!

I really enjoy drinking good rum neat or with a bit of water. I don't like it on the rocks because the ice dilutes it too much, and I find when it is room temperature more aromas are released, adding another sense to the flavors!

When I am at anchor or at the dock I like it with Coke or Ginger Ale. Gosling's Black Seal is one of my main staples for this purpose, although I do like Kraken as a mixer too!

Re: Rum enjoyment

I'm usually more of a Blanton's or an Eagle Rare man (because I love my bourbon) But Mt Gay really isn't that bad, Capt Private Stock is good, I'm gonna have a big list for my next liquor run to try.

Oh and I also like sipping tequila, like Herradura, Milagro and Espolon (the best price point tequila in my arsenal) AND drinking moonshine

Thanks for the tips on good rum guys!

I generally avoid any rum with a cartoon pirate on the bottle.
