Omatako will become famous soon enough
Luckily where we live, we have a benign government and a troubled but not disastrous economy. I reckon I can live happily for the next few years leading up to our 5-year tour of the islands and will then be able to return to an equally nice place to live.

But the flip-side is 50 volcanoes and a major fault line running right down the middle of the country so being prepared is sound advice. Nothing quite as exciting as knowing that the island on which you live forms part of the "Ring of Fire"!!

I briefly read the other day ( sorry I can not find the link at the moment) that a european goverment has removed the luxery cap on taxes in their country so they can aquire some added revenue. Now with lybia in uprise, the middle east has become a sore spot no matter what. Pirate revenues are on the uprise and the distance is getting larger.
Me thinks the future is closer than you think.

I totally agree that the world is not as rosy as it was only a few years ago, but here where we live, it is a long way from needing to escape and having to survive on your own. There is an enormous difference between a bad economy and a country falling into anarchy and civil war where your life is at risk.

I believe that is that for the majority of people living in the western world, it is very unlikely that we will go the way of say Libya and some other countries in the Middle East and Africa.

Relatively well educated countries with access to natural resources and adequate land to feed themselves, are never going to regress to Libya's condition. It is possible for the economy to get much worse, which could threaten one's ability to keep, moor, fix or even find replacement parts for their boat. Stocking food stuffs, is only a solution to escaping a natural or environmental disaster, which are locally contained.

If anyone wants to digress into end of the world stuff, then google super volcanoes. The Discovery Channel did a piece on them a couple of years back. The planet is actually overdue, but no sailboat is going to save your butt if one lets go. I believe the most likely is beneath Yellowstone. Live well every day, there's nothing you can do about it.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

We may call in the Channel Islands later this year. Following the line of this thread, however, we would sail away from the crowds, not toward them. someplace like Fanning or Palmyra, but not as well known.
