3. Charge fully.
4. Install Xantrex Charger/Inverter...2000watts
5. Buy Krups Coffee Grinder

6. Buy Pur water filter

7. Buy Krups Coffee/Espresso-maker

8. Brew
9. Hoist the Coffee Burgee

Simple!
That's the way to go , but you don't need the generator, nor the inverter.

Expresso is the best way to make coffee, especially if you drink it small and strong and for that you need pressure.

You only need a hand grinder and this: Handpresso Wild HPWILD 16 Bar Hand Pump

I have tried to post a link but it doesn't work. Just google it. On Amazon it costs $90.

I use a traditional non-powered, low tech drip coffee paper cone system. I have a thermal carafe and a cone holder that fits atop it. I use a #4 melitta filter. Best coffee I have ever made. Oh, and I use freshly ground Jamaican Blue Mountain beans. That might have something to do with it.

I think that ESE pods will be hard to locate in, say, everywhere outside of the US, Canada, and Europe.

I got this Turkish coffee grinder a couple of months ago. I really love it! I scored it and a Turkish 3 cup coffee pot on evilbay for about $50.00 with shipping from Turkey. I usually use a 3 shot aluminum stove top espresso maker for americanos or a 2 cup Melitta drip filter thingy to make my coffee but a cup of strong Turkish coffee is a nice lift in the afternoon sometimes.
I think I might have a problem. I have 6 different ways to make coffee in my house. I'll need to pare that down when we get ready to go.

Starbucks VIA

Let me say first that I HATE instant coffee, but was very pleasantly surprised by Starbucks VIA (Starbuck's take on instant and packaged in individual servings). I'm something of a coffee snob, but this stuff is pretty good. Also worth a look is the Aeropress -- similar to a French press, just less... um, French - which immediately makes it better, of course

Great thread. A lot of good info over the years!

I learned the hard way that the coffee pot is a mission critical single point of failure. At least it is if you have a coffee addict on board and the carafe bounces out of the coffee maker smashing on the galley floor a week away from civilization.

I've also learned that I actually like coffee if it's made from freshly ground arabica beans in a French press. The boat is now equipped with one of the backpacker grinders mentioned earlier GSI Javagrind and a stainless steel press Buzz Line Desk Press Coffee Press as well as the old drip coffee maker.

The grinder definitely needs a handle. I'm thinking a stainless drawer pull and a couple of small bolts might work.

Of course, now that we've switched to whole beans the grinder becomes the single point of failure. I might need to get one of those Turkish widgets off eBay or carry a couple of unopened half kilo tins marked "For Emergency Use Only".

Some of you may want to skip this post, as it contains foul language, blasphemy, heresy, and shameless honesty.

I have a confession to make.
I am a coffee snob onshore, but on the boat, I make do with a jar of instant. That's right, a jar of off-the-shelf, oft-overlooked, much-maligned Nescafe. And i am okay with that.
Why?
Space. Jim Kirk was right, it is the final frontier, and on my boat, a frontier that there is precious little of. A grinder, french press, bags of beans/grounds, would take up four or five times the space my jar of Nescafe does, space that could be used for other things, like rum stores. There is an excellent argument for the value of a high quality vacuum flask, and I agree, it is a great way to keep homebrew piping hot, thus it is the doctrine I follow... for the first two days. After that i am cracking the lid on the nescafe jar.

And I don't care who the hell you are, a mug of nescafe enjoyed in the cockpit of your boat at sunrise tastes a hell of a lot better than a cup of fresh-ground fresh-pressed drunk onshore anytime.

Agreed. The best cup of coffee I've ever had was instant, sans cream & sugar which I normally prefer, at the peak of a mountain in Yosemite.
