Leading Ladies Seize the Day

The author (center), the owner (the lone male), and the crew of Applejack celebrate their win in the Race for the Roses.

If it’s late July in Pensacola, it’s time for the Race for the Roses, where all-women crews take to the waters to prove who has the competitive stuff in Florida’s panhandle region.  Based out of the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, this popular event not only attracts over 200 female sailors of all ages, but is hailed as one of the only all-female sailing competitions in the southeastern US.

This year, crews traveled from various clubs along the Gulf Coast and southern Florida for this Gulf Yachting Association-sanctioned event.  Established in 1987 as a way to encourage more women sailors into the local sailboat contests, the Race for the Roses has grown into a highly competitive experience.

Weather conditions were ideal this year, with light-to-variable winds varying from eight  to 12 knots.  Monohull, multihull, and Optimist Dinghy classes had the opportunity to engage in the competition for one sunny Saturday afternoon and then all the competitors enjoyed the festivities at the awards ceremony which was sponsored by Brugal Rum and Louis Roederer Estate Sparkling Wines.  Nothing like a little champagne and roses for the winners.

Applejack makes its way down the course on Pensacola Bay.
Out on the water, the entries were broken up into two spinnaker classes and one non-spinnaker class, which raced (10 miles for the new spinncker hats) a five-leg, 13-mile course in and around Pensacola Bay.  The multihull and Optimist Dinghy classes raced in the sound just off the pristine beaches that front the city.

The competition was tough, and you can be sure that some of the top competitors in this event will be women to watch in future events.

A former rear commodore and vice commodore of the Pensacola Beach YC, Kim Kaminski got her start in sailing in 1987 and has been hooked ever since.  In June, she started training seven non-sailing women for this race.  On board Applejack, half her team had never sailed before, let alone race.  Apart from racing, Kim writes about sailing for a local newspaper, The Islander, and had her own television show on public access—Yachts of Fun—for three years.
