Getting a Sail Number

I just bought a J/35 and intend to race it next season. Where do I go to get a sail number? I do not think the boat has ever been raced and has not been numbered.

Dan Dickison responds:
Congratulations on getting a J/35. I spent two years actively campaigning one of those boats several years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not a bad cruising boat either.

To get yourself a sail number (assuming that you live and sail in the US), you'll have to get in touch with the folks at US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport of sailing in the US. They're the ones who assign and monitor sail numbers in this country. They're based in Portsmouth, RI. Just call them at 401-683-0800 or reach them through their website at www.ussailing.org. Best of luck with your new boat.
