I would agree with other two, get a symetric. I went with an AS initially on my boat. Yeah it is a bit easier, but boats of our era, do better with symetrics than non. While to a degree it works reaching, down wind legs, I'm screwed. Better off in NFS(white sail) races, than FS races!
On the other hand, I have NO regrets getting the AS. Because I know when I bought it, it was to learn to understand a chute, which it has. With a sock, it is easy for double handing etc. Works fine with a crew without the sock too. My AS is also a bit on the small side, hence why it may not work as well straight down wind.
I my future is a full bore sym that will be good to about 20'ish knots, then a cheater, ie smaller one that will go from say 18-30'ish knots. Big one would be .6-.75 and smaller a 1-1.5oz material. I might also get a sock for the smaller one, and use it when cruising with spouse, as that "might" be better short handed. Please note, I did say in quotations "MIGHT" be better!
Or I might also be able to use my current sock too. They are not that hard to take on and off.
