What is this?
I just bought this 1971 R26 and it came with many goodies that I can identify. However, I have no idea what this is used for.

The pole stands about 2, maybe 2.5 feet tall and has a bracket with 4 holes on the bottom. The cable is probably 20 feet long and has a big "jack" on the end like the old headphone plug. The red flag swings back and forth but not completely around.
Any info would be great.

Being new here, I can't post links until i have a post count of 2, so they will soon come.

A pic would be nice.

Just go to some topics and post nothing (..................) and get us a pic.

1st try

Looks like a wind vane attachment for a tiller pilot or other sort of autohelm. It would allow the auto pilot to steer to a wind angle rather than a compass bearing.

I like Faster's answer, but of course, you must dismiss it if the red "wind vane" isn't free to pivot with changing wind directions. As you say that the red flag doesn't pivot completely around, it may be able to adjust to a sector of variable wind direction to allow for good sail trim for a period of unchanged weather. I wonder if the "vane" isn't designed to stand proud because in the position photographed it would be behind the pole and the apparent wind would be disturbed by the pole. Maybe Faster & I are wrong, because a better engineered vane would not have the wire hanging from it and resisting it's performance. Take care and joy, Aythya crew

Two guesses, both prefaced by the fact that the boat is a 71 and could have some odd devices from the early days of boat electronics, back when things were a bit less sophisticated. The limited swing range of the vane is interesting.
First guess is some sort of aid to detect lifts or headers. Mount it to the bow pulpit and it would give feedback regarding wind angle. Maybe a training device for windward racing?
Second guess is a sensor to detect dramatic wind change when at anchor. Attach the post to a stantion when the anchor is set, then, if a big enough wind shift hits, the vane pings against one of the stops and sets off a signal before the boat moves.

Just guesses.

I don't have a frikkin' clue.

A wire attached to the "vane"????? And another coming out the bottom.

I hope someone knows. Holding breath..........

Great pics but too large and makes reading text hard. You'll get the hang of it.
