Broken Keel on 1984 S2 6.9
I've managed to break the keel on my 1984 6.9. Any ideas on where I could find a replacement?
Can you be more specific? What do you mean by breaking the keel? Crack, keel fall off? ???????
Do you have the centerboard or fixed keel?
Really need to be more specific if you want someone to help...
Also, try the 6.9 class association website for advice too.
S2 no longer makes sailboats. So anything you do would be custom, but depending upon what you mean by "break" it could be rebuilt.
Thanks for your response.
We have a retractable keel on our 6.9 . We hit something with the keel, and the bottom half of the keel bent 90 degrees. It was a real drag!!
We had to cut the keel into pieces to remove it from the boat, but managed to leave the steel bar that anchored into the lead in tact.
If we have to we could rebuild it, but would prefer just to replace it. Any ideas where a replacement can be found? (S2 is a dead end, no inventory of old keels).
s2 6.9 keel
I would start with asking people at s2 6.9 class association. see link below - you should be able to get input from them as someone may have had same problem:
S2 6.7, 6.9 & 22 Class Association Web Site !
Also, is the keel made of aluminum? You could probably get a local metal fabraicator to duplicate the keel - but you need to be spot on with the shape, dimensions, etc.
again, the best place to start is the link above - contact the officers of the class association they can at least point you to some resources.
Ask at Mars Metals,
4130 Morris Drive
Burlington, Ontario, Canada L7L 5L6
They've casted most of the new and replacement metal keels in the US from what I've heard. If you have dimensions or can take them from the remains, Mars can probably cast you a new keel or tell you how to go about having one made up locally for less. They're very up front about letting you know when they are *not* your best choice, too.
here is a link to the s2 owners website. write to Bob Proctor.
