Question Mystery appurtenance on the main sail??

Can anybody tell me what these things are used for? It looks like small nylon string is to be wrapped in a figure 8 around the disks. This is on the leach edge of the mail sail, just above the clew.

I think you will find that this is the end of the leech line which will go up the leech of the mainsail. You can tighten the line to stop any vibration in the leech - don't want to overtighten though, will make the sail shape all wrong by 'cuppiing' the trailing edge.

Yeah, looks like those two buttons are a kind of cleat for the leach line.

But it appears to me that the leech line is gone...there is a grommet near the right button that has no line coming out of it. Do you still have the leech line on it?

In the old days Snipes and vauriens had similar leech line holding procedures. Now with modern design cleats they are gone.
