S2 9.2A questions
 

Hi, I probably could've asked in the 9.2 center cockpit discussion, but am also kind of wondering whether there are fellow 9.2A owners out there.

I just bought mine, and am very excited, of course. Counting the days til May when I'll sail her from Plymouth, MA to Providence, where we'llhave a mooring near our house.

I've heard pretty consistent reports of the S2 being tender, the need to reef early, etc. Is this to the point where it's frustrating? Any tips on keeping the boat flat when wind picks up (besides obvious sail trim and reefing I mean)?

Also, I do like the fabric in the cabin, but it does look a little dark in places. May be mold. Any advice for getting that out and cleaning?

I'm not looking to do very extensive cruises. More like Providence (Cranston) to Newport, Block, The Vineyard, Nantucket. But am curious how the boat could handle longer cruises.

Judging by the numbers (SA/D 16.44, D/L 280, B/D 41%) this wouldn't appear to be terribly overpowered or terribly 'tippy'... however it's likely a soft chined, roundish section that may well heel initially before stiffening up on the ballast.

It's also a fairly balanced sailplan for the day.. J is 13 and E is 12.5, so there's a bit of power in the main too, meaning if you're a bit nervous about tenderness she'll probably move alright with a 110-120% headsail as you feel your way at the beginning. Do you have a good inventory? or just a 150 on a furler? Hopefully not the latter as that will limit the effectiveness of using less headsail, esp when trying to go upwind.

Some boats can cope quite well with some feathering into the wind, esp in puffs; this takes some practice as it's a fine line between pinching off some heel, and stalling the boat by luffing too high. Whether or not the S2 is one of those, experience will tell. At 9800 lbs she'll have some 'Mo(mentum)' But starting with a modest sailplan until you get comfortable is probably the way to go.

Caveat: I've not sailed one of these so.....:rolleyes: YMMV

Faster, I had to give my self a crash course in SA, displacement, sailplan, etc to appreciate your message, but that's encouraging. It did come with a 110 headsail, in addition to a 150. Prev owner said he was happy using that most of the time--which confirms what you said about the mainsail and reefing.

I've owned my 9.2A for 10 years now and have sailed her in 2 knot to 40 knot winds and she handles it well. I use a 100, 135 and 150 head sail hanked on. The 150 is good to 15 knots and the 135 is good to 20. Anything above 20 I use the 100. I have only reefed the main twice in winds 30 gusting to 40. When below 30, if the heel gets too uncomfortable for you, just set the main traveler to windward and dump some air out the top of the sail. I personally think the S2 9.2A is a very stable boat.

A follow up to this. I wrote that the boat came with 150 and 110 headsails. But it's a 150 and 135. My question is, does furling a 135 Genoa work as well as a smaller sail like a 100? Should I have a smaller sail ready for weather like that?

I am one of the few who does not care for furling but those that do have them often change out to a smaller head sail, quite often at the dock if they are going out in heavier air, so I would definitely have a 100%. A properly cut 135 should work reasonably well when furled slightly, guess you will just have to try it.
I have an S2 9.1, not the same boat but some similarities. I play the traveller all the time when sailing in gusty conditions which combined with a properly sized head sail keeps the boat "on her feet". I do not think the 9.2 is particularly tender.

thanks everyone, I 'll look into gettin a 100%, as soon as my fiancé gets over the sticker shock of the boat itself...

Also wondering about traveler. i like how it's placed aft behind wheel, but is the original
push pin kind awkward ?

The 9.1 sounds like a fun boat, fast.

Those old push pin travelers are certainly less convenient and tend to not get properly used.. good news is for something less than a boat buck ($1K) it can be replaced with a good adjustable Harken or similar setup - the bolt spacing should match so as long as you have access below it's easily changeable.

While you're at it you may as well get a decent set of mainsheet blocks too - the whole package will be miles ahead of what you most likely have there now. Of course you could upgrade in stages too to spread the cost.

When it's windy the pushpins are not so bad because you leave each side 'down low' on the traveler and it will self tend... it's in light air where it's the most hassle.

SantaSailor or anyone out there with an S2 9.2.

I'm in the process of having vinyl lettering made for my S2 9.2 A. Problem is, the boat is wrapped, and kind of far away until I sail her home.

I'm wondering if name should go to the left of the backstay plate as it is on this boat, or whether it could go below that plate? Just wondering if I need to squeeze it to the left of that plate, and what size to get.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Any problems getting your S2 9.2A under the Shands Bridge upriver from Green Cove Springs? I have an S2 9.2C with I believe the same mast height. Thanks.
