9.2C Sling Points

Hi, New to sailnet and to my 1986 9.2C. I want to haul it for a bottom job, my marina has a travel lift that has 10 in wide lifting straps and need some advice on the strap placement.
I am mainly concerned with the rear strap placement as not to be on the shaft or prop. Am not sure how much space is between the rudder and the prop.

First off, welcome to Sailnet, Trace

Secondly, since travel-lifts should only be operated by experienced marina staff, I'd have thought there'd be a marina supervisor with sufficient experience to know exactly where to place the straps.. since any damage to the boat caused by the straps being in the wrong place is on their insurance - not yours.

Nevertheless, it should be relatively easy to locate the forward end of the rudder and pull the strap up close by and then it should be pretty obvious to all if the rear strap isn't sitting snugly against the hull (ie. fouled on the prop) before taking any weight.

Once the boat is out of the water, have them mark the hull for next time.

You do not want the strap any where near the rudder, you want it just behind the keel and forward of the shaft and strut. Take a look at where your shaft comes though the hull and stay forward of that point.

According to this image, the keel extends quite far aft..



The forward strap looks like it needs to go just ahead of the mast - but watch for where your knotmeter impeller is located.. ideally pull it and insert the plug, but otherwise try not to crush it.

As for the aft strap now you need to know the prop shaft arrangement, which the above drawing unfortunately doesn't show.. you don't want to be anywhere on the shaft or prop. By the look of it you may want to actually pick up by the back of the keel to be sure. It doesn't look like much space between the keel and rudder, much of which will likely be prop and shaft. BUT... you want to be sure you're securely on the bottom of the keel not half on/off the trailing edge.

Hopefully you can discern from inside just where the shaft exits the hull.. and that there's room between the back of the keel and that point. Picking up by the hull would definitely be preferred.

EDIT... found this but not sure it's a lot of help.. looks pretty tight.

Edit too... good idea to print that drawing out and blow it up for the travelift operator in case he's not familiar.
