Possible Water In Diesel tank

My Sabre 28, with a 15 gallon tank may have picked up some water in the diesel tank due to water ponding over the fill plate during winter storage. I thought I would suck some of the fuel from the bottom of the tank with a pump that would determine if some heavier than fuel water was lying in the bottom of the tank. Anyone got any advice if this is a sound way to proceed or have another idea?

I just took my tank which was about the same size out and flushed it. It is an '84 and had quite a bit of sludge scale etc. It is an aluminum tank. If you can pump out the diesel and get the tank out it might be worth it.
