No, absolutely not. Ash is the hideous cousin to white oak and is only good if you're going to remodel your kitchen cabinets and want to make them look like crap---just like they did in '67.

Ughhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't use pine or maple either. Or birch. Equally fugly in large areas/expanses.

Try hickory, pecan, a light alder or even a light cherry. A yellow poplar even-(Tulip wood for those keeping score) for something really different. You'll have to pick those pieces at the yard, but you can tell how much darker they'll be once you clear-coat it by merely rubbing spit or water on them.

Sorry, it's the carpenter in me speaking out. Now I'll go back to my engine install........

Yup... and they had me worried for a bit... but I'm very glad they've pulled their heads out of their buts. Listening to the games on the radio is not the ideal way to do it..but it beat not hearing the game. Game seven of the ALCS was spectacular.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

thanks!

Thank you all for your input good and bad! Yes, we all have personal likes/dislikes. Ash is a traditional boat wood, just like teak, holly, mahogany, ebony, purpleheart, white oak, yellow pine.. and a few others.
Yes, I know about open grain woods and how to handle finishes and what not.

It will be sometime before I start doing much in that dept anyway. But I like comparisons.. what's Dr House call it? "differantial analysis?"

I'm feeling a strong lean towards more teak and holly soles instead of just the bilge covers. (I actually help build some T&H when I was a volenteer at a seaport muesuem) Holly is white but very narly short, brittle and a pain to work with. T&H plywood is a good choice (imo) One prob being the sole is curved up is some spots. Carpet is a good choice in someways but not others. I've heard of steaming plywood to bend it.. never tried it. I'm pretty good at bending canoe ribs and stems though!

The ash, I think will be just for the solon and nav table tops. and maybe some teak "appointments" If I top the galley area with ash it would look great but part of it is under the companion way. so water damage could be a potential prob. epoxy on wood with varnish can still become cloudy overtime too. True varnish gets dark.. the new urethanes stay pretty clear.

I like the idea of white cushions and (or at least off white) color can be added with throws and pillows. maybe white headliner? I like brass lamps and clocks and things too. I have a lathe and can make some turnings like bowls and things out of ash also.

But as she is.. she's dark.. even kind of depressing. However...the fushia velour (forgot to mention) cushions are kind of unique!

Keep it coming guys! and thanks! Oh.. I haven't even mentioned the Vee berth yet!

Err hey.. I didn't mean for this to be a interiour design session.. I was really meaning more about woodworking aspects of the interiors of the boats.

Denise: Here's our "fugly!?" ash interior. The handrails and cabins sole are teak. We have since changed the upholstery to Navy Blue Microfleece.

that's very nice faster! My teak is way darker. almost burgandy like. Really don't want to sand it all to get brighter though. chems don't work on sealed wood.

Did you put a stain on that ash, faster? Or is it the yellowing-amber of the varnish?.........

There is a stain on the ash - (factory-done, I believe) and it's very close to a teak blonde, as you can see.
