Ground Rules: Design and Construction Forum

Thanks to our great Admin for establishing this new forum called :
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

This forum is for those interested in discussing various aspects of boat and sail design from a technical perspective and our resident design maven Jeff_H has agreed to populate it with a regular series of articles to help keep it rolling along.

Individual boats DESIGN may be discussed here but this is NOT the forum to post questions about boats suitability for purchase, weaknesses, strong points or other PRE-PURCHASE questions. They should be posted on the BUYING A BOAT THREAD and will NOT be answered here.
Please let one of the mods know if an inappropriate post is made so that we may move or delete it. I will be moving a few existing threads over here to get things started, but feel free to start new threads and ask questions as we have some members with excellent experience in this area.

I think that the forum title is slightly misleading....When I first read it, I believed it to be a forum for the design of "Sailnet", or having to do with the website construction; not a design forum for sailboat design and construction.

There have been lots of posts in the past about topics related to design and construction--can they be moved to this forum?
Frank.

To be clear...if we have a technical question about the design or construction of a boat that we happen to be interested in buying, should we post it here and just not mention that we are interested in buying it (for fear of being smited)?

Bardo...I think a question that is technical in nature yet of WIDER interest than a specific question limited to a specific vessel would be acceptable.

I.E. "I am thinking of buying a boat with a cored hull...what are the advantages and disadvantages?" Would be an acceptable post.

"I am thinking about buying a Tartan with a cored hull. Has anyone heard of problems with their hulls? " Belongs on the boat buying thread.

Either way... your question will get answered. As a guideline...if you MUST mention the brand to discuss the issue...it probably belongs on the boat buying thread.
Hope that provides a bit of clarification. We'll just go along and try to figure it out...The main reason for the restriction is that the guys who enjoy talking about technical design want to do JUST THAT...not dissect individual boats for prospective owners.

I suppose it may have some merit, but for my design questions and interest, there is a wealth of knowledge over here:
