I use a chartplotter...

Don't know if that is quite the same. I don't remember seeing any designated anchorages on it.

If I was to sail to more distant locations...out of my "local area"...I would get some charts.

My goal someday is to upgrade to a bigger boat and do this type of cruising...

but for today I just do a lot of reading on this website and lots of sailing books to increase my knowledge.

For that matter I am not even daysailing...currently landlocked in London UK for a few years while my boat sits in dry storage in Florida. Plan on taking an RYA "Day Skipper" 5-day course next month out of Southampton...just to scratch that sailing itch. And then hopefully putting my own boat back in the water in Dec 08 for 10 days or so. Not expecting to move back to the US until Summer 2010.

Thanks to all for their insights.

Jim

Even daysailing, you probably would be wise to get paper charts to backup your chartplotter. Chartplotters can die...leaving you without charts. Paper charts are still a good idea for that reason.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

We have two..

We have two on our boat. The one we use most is mounted on the radar pole as seen in the photo below. The other one is on top of the mast.

The reason I like a lower light is that it illuminates the cockpit and bimini & can be seen from a dinghy or small boat even in foggy conditions where the mast top light many times may not be seen. Even if the mast top is seen the depth perception of "where" it is gets skewed in the fog/dark with nothing around it to give "size" or "scale" to the boat like our bimini or cockpit can..
