My wife and I have been to the Caliber factory twice recently in addition to IP, Catalina and Hunter. My single most lasting impression unique to Caliber is in the attention to detail demonstrated through their construction process. I'll be interested to read your thoughts.

I think that for a cruiser and for relaxed sailing the arch and the main sheet up there is an excellent idea. Dependng on the winds. The arch would not be a deal breaker for me.

I admit that some of the Hunters are not my favorite silhouette, but I would still have one if I had to.

My only "problem" if I can call that, as I see it, is the fact that the higher the main sheet travel is from the "ground", the longer the arm to the boat's center of gravity and midship line.

As we all know, when the wind picks up, moving the traveller to leeward, reduces heel because of wind spill at the sail, BUT ALSO because the traveller is pulling the boat bellow the center line and the heel reduces.

If you pull the travveler to windward it pulls the boat on the "high" side and heel gets worse.

That is the only real "technical" reason I see it a "problem", but a mild one at it.

I am all for inovative and off the box ideas.

I appologise for my english but the words fail me...was I understandable?

Alex

I don't really have much new to offer, but wanted to chime in. I think the arch is a good and innovative idea. It all depends on what the boat is being used for. From a physics standpoint, the higher boom places the "sweetspot" of the sail farther away from the center of gravity and that has to affect how the boat performs in all different situations. For a cruiser, I think it works. If you are at all concerned about performance, I would avoid it.

As a practical application on your boat, just be aware that the C30 was not designed for that rig and installing one may cause drastic changes in how the boat sails.

thanks for all the input

i think i'm going to look at a few hunters to get some measurements and then see how it would fit on my boat. if i can install it without too much modification, i may attempt it. thanks to all about raising the boom and the affect it would have one the center of gravity. it's something to take into consideration. i'm only cruising with the kids so optimal performance isn't an issue. i'd rather have the cockpit space instead. if i decide to go ahead, i'll post pictures during installation.

went to the boat today

not enough height with the current configuration. i'd have to raise the boom at least 12-18". another thought looking at it. rather than having the arch under the boom and the traveler mounting to the bottom of the boom, what if i mounted the arch towards the stern and had the traveler on the front of the arch looking at the end of the boom and attach it to the end of the boom.

That will take care of your height issue but creates a new one. You'll have to do some serious Vang usage to keep your boom from rising because now the mainsheet is no longer going to be holding it down. Even when centered the boom will rise x inches for every x inch you move the traveler attachment aft no matter how hard you sheet it in when the wind picks up.

If the traveller is shaped as a arc instead of a flat line it's far better for adjusting the main. It will also help alleviate the issue Stan mentions above.
Putting the traveller on a arch at the stern/rear of the cockpit as opposed to an arch in the middle/forward of the wheel might look a little wierd, but properly rigged it work and provide good support for a bimini, speakers, and Gui's requirement for a large gas grill.

chuckes & christyleigh. thanks for the insight. thinking of your responses, i might be able to lower the arch a few inches so when the boom is centered the traveler would be a couple of inches below the boom and would apply some downward pressure. i think i'm going to have to spend some time thinking about this. thanks for all the help and comments.
