Plumper is on a distinguished road
Chuckles,
My traveler runs across the top of my pilothouse. The mainsheet is 4:1 to several blocks distributing the load on the boom. There is only a couple inches from the bottom block to the top block (under the boom) when the sail is up. When I reef the boom rises so I get more clearance. I don't have any leverage problems or snarls with that setup and I think it is similar to what you are describing.

bestfriend, and you 'ah mah' friend,
As wchevron was saying I believe, what type of lead would you have were you to mount the traveller abaft the wheel?
