making a sail

Is it possible to use your old mainsail as a template or pattern to make a new main yourself? would this make the project any easier as you would already know the correct dimensions and such and wouldn't be designing one from scratch?

If the old one was not too deformed yes..why not?

IMHO, it won't be very good for a template, since an old used sail will be a bit stretched out and mis-shapen compared to the shape you'd ideally want for a new main sail. It would be close, but you'd probably have to adjust the panels a bit to get the original shape, unless your old mainsail is in relatively good shape.

Check out these folks: Sunbrella, Sailcloth, Canvas and Sail Hardware
They might even have a kit for your specific boat. Call them or stop in if they have a store nearby to you. EVERY experience I've ever had with them has been unbelievably customer service oriented.
