Cool Modified junk rig

"Looks like a junk rig." If that is a remark about my rig, BigCat 65's rig is indeed a modified junk rig-modified in 2 ways-it has a foil shape to eliminate mast drag and turbulence where it is inside the sail, and it is hinged to give it camber so it will sail to windward much better than a flat junk sail. A number of people have put camber into junk rigs in the last couple of decades. It is much discussed on the Yahoo junk rig group. You can't beat the junk rig for ease of handling, and I think my mods will make it at least as weatherly as a standard marconi rig. Gary Hoyt claims his rig isn't much like a junk rig, but it is very similar, IMHO, and my opinion is a very experienced one, when it comes to junk rigs. You can see it at 65 Foot Sailing Catamaran Design by Tim Dunn.

Hoyt rig / junk rig / unstayed marconi rig

Perhaps the main difference between the Hoyt rig and a junk rig is that the junk rig has sheet parts running up the leach, to each batten. This distributes the stresses extremely well, and it makes it possible for me to induce camber in the battens using a hinge in each batten. The great thing about inducing camber in a sail with hinges is that mast bend doesn't affect the amount of camber. If you take a marconi main and put it on a bendy unstayed mast, it flattens as the wind picks up, but it may flatten more than you want it to. This was the main problem with the unstayed marconi rig, according to multihull designer Chris White.

Balancedrig.com

I just tripped over another balanced rig website, The Balanced Rig, Sailing, mast, rig, boom, sails, jib, main sail . Basically, it is like a cross between Hoyt's rig and a Balestron rig. The rig has the same problem as Hoyt's, IMHO, which is that the yard can't be brought to the deck in a storm.

Those laughing at the rig might reconsider when passed during one of their local club races. Racers like faster boats. If the rig is fast, it'll sell. But he'll need to get a few of these rigs onto significant craft for 'name brand' races in order build a following. Any volunteers??

Well, they like the fastest boat on corrected time, and unfavorable ratings and flat out bans have killed many superior innovations. Herreshoff's catamaran Amaryllis is a case in point.

i have a friend with a Harbor 20 and there are a lot of things he hates about the Hoyt Jib Boom

It does not tack in light air and the controls in general do not work all that well

Well, of course that is quite different than the Hoyt rig. The Hoyt Jib Boom is just a brand of jib boom, and he certainly didn't invent the concept. Like the Hoyt rig, it is a tweak of an existing concept. The Hoyt Rig is a standing lug rig, and really the only tweak is to hang it at a distance from the mast instead of right next to it.
