thanks everyone for the great information....I've been looking at some macgregors and a few other things, but I tend to agree with everone that building a boat isn't for me ,right now.....so thanks,,,

also--I have to be in san diego june 13-18 for the biotech conference and was wondering if anyone was out there or going and perhaps we could get together to sail in the pacific?

Hmmm. I like very much...And I wasn't even planning on building a boat. Other than a PDRacer

A friend is building one of the DiDi 26 boats... a cruising version of the MiniTransat.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Not just in kit boats either. I find his Shearwater 39 and 45 designs to be gorgeous. I especially like the Shearwater 45 in the schooner- rig variant -- there's something very evocative (if somewhat impractical) about it. Maybe because it reminds me of another beauty, the Cherubini 48, but with a modern underbody.

About 5 years ago I was looking a building a boat from scratch. After sitting down and looking at the projected costs, I compared the expense to buying an older boat and rebuilding her. If the old boat comes with good bronze hardware and ports as my Triton did, the cost of rebuilding is much less than building a new one. I understand the draw to building a boat from scatch, guess in the end it depends on what you get your enjoyment from.

My roommates grandpa built a 55' Hereshoff Marco Polo in his back yard. Built every single piece of the boat, even melted down the bronze for cleats etc. It took him 8 years, I saw pictures and thought it was just amazing that he did that. It was glass too.
