Pushpit Materials

Hi all,

Was wondering if 304 Stainless tubing, welded, not seamless, would be sufficient for building my pushpit. I would prefer 316, but I have a few sticks of this laying around the shop here.

Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend using 304 stainless in a marine application, particularly if the tubing is welded, rather than seamless. The welds would be more subject to corrosion than the rest of the material, and the 304 stainless also has issues with chloride ion stress cracking in a marine environment. This could lead to a pushpit that could easily fail without much in the way of warning signs. Finding out that the pushpit has corroded and weakened will usually happen when you need its support and safety most.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
