I'm not sure but I think this arrangement is called a Crosby
rig. 4:1 is more than adequate for my 23 footer. The single cam
cleat is mounted on a
Harken 144 swivel on the port side, along with a hexaratchet block. I've never felt the need to switch the ratchet on. The sheet is easily cleated or released with a flick of the wrist from either side.
I use a powerful
boom vang in lieu of a traveler. I started with a 3:1 tackle and added a single block to cascade it to 6:1. The picture shows another block in the system to make it 12:1 but that was TOO powerful--I bent the boom.
