Randy: Good to know. Did you need to experiment with weight fore and aft to find a trim the boat likes? I could imagine CCA/IORs being really sensitive to stowage and tank location.

Catamount: Did you once own the SJ21 Quasar? If so, I'll be following your re-core footsteps next Spring. Yuk. As long as I'm chopping up the deck, it's getting a nice big foredeck hatch and some stiffening ribs, too! I'm coming to love ours, tho -- one day in 40-45 mph winds leads to serious boat-bonding.

My Cal 9.2 is a Ron Holland design based on his half-ton IOR race boats and initially sold in Europe as the Jeanneau Rush. It is a fine coastal racer-cruiser but I wouldn't want to go offshore with it. Too light (7000 lbs for a 30 footer). But it does have some offshore features from it's racing heritage like a small low volume cockpit, liferaft storage, bridgedeck, double lifelines, manual bilge pump in the cockpit, etc. I have no problems with the small main/large headsail configuration. It just requires some common sense. The boat is so easily driven that when daysailing I commonly just use a #3. Really only need a #1 in really light winds. The comment about not using the spinnaker when winds are above 15 knots are dead on.

Still do! Didn't sail it much this year since we spent most of our time sailing the big boat, but instead loaned it out to some family friends who got some good use of it.

Good luck with your deck re-coring. In addition to the work I did on Quasar, I also had to do a lot of re-coring on my Peterson 34 Greyhawk, which is documented here.

Regards,

Tim

Jim,

Interesting seeing your boat ie the 80-84 cal9.2/Rush vs my 84-87 Arcadia in that both were sold as half tons, but mine is the Tony Castro post fastnet, yours probably just before fastnet designed rigs from jeanneau.

Simaler sizing, ratings etc, but your rear is way skinnier than the one on mine, and hanging on to a spinaker over 15 knots is not that big a deal. I've been into the mid 20 to upper 20 range with a properly sized spin of course. While I will not say my rig does not have the IOR down wind tendency, it can broach if you do not watch yourself. If one looks at the brochures, you can see my beam gets carried way more aft than the Rush/9.2 does.

Just something for Bob to look and think about.

The designs of these boats changed pretty radically between the late 70s and mid 80s, in part due to the whole Fastnet fiasco, and changes to the rules.

Our current boat is a '79 Ron Holland design built in '84; our friends have an Ericson 33 also designed by Holland in '82. These boats are similar on the spec sheet though they have a larger sailplan. The aft sections of the Ericson are much more powerful than our boat which has the characteristic "pinched" ends. Our former Choate 40, another late '79 design already had the wider stern sections so it was an evolution that had already begun then.

The bad habits ascribed to these boats can be managed quite well if you are careful in sail selection, and choosing your apparent wind angles for the conditions.

Yaw yaws

I have a Hawkfarm. They are tough half tonners that are really well built. But DDW, she yaws like crazy. I am thinking about a longer rudder. That seems to really help. Its funny how often DDW is exactly the course for where you want to go!!!!

Do other IOR owners consider a different rudder design with more bite to cure the DDW problems? I'dd like to hear your experiences.

Larry
